For the past 4/5 years I've been primarily listening to symphonic metal and power metal. What you need to figure out is what you like and what you don't; you don't have to limit yourself to certain sub-genres, you could stumble across specific bands that you like that are associated with sub-genres you aren't a big fan of. There's been a lot of variety so far so take what you like the sound of as a base and use it to expand.

I'll link some of my all time and also recent favourites/most played bands and songs.

Hope you find some stuff you like.

Since, no one has admitted to it yet, I will. I am really partial to Hair Metal from the 80's. It happened at really pivotal time in my life. *COUGH* teenager *COUGH* I feel it is the most accessible era of heavy metal. You can't go wrong with the 70's beginnings of heavy metal: Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Motorhead, and the other bands that you have listed.

From the 80's: Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses, and Extreme. Some other bands that was called Hair Metal, but were just really good rock bands: Poison, Cinderella, Great White, and Tesla.

I fell away from metal for a while. I felt it had become a non-melodic screaming contest. It was like Death Metal, but without the sense of humor. (How can anyone listen to the lyrics of a Death Metal song without laughing?) The only one from the 90's I will recommend is Pantera.

I recently tried to get back into metal. Some of my recent favorites are Halestorm, In This Moment, Black Mountain Cherry, and Black Label Society.

I fell in love with metal by being thrown in the deep end (a friend played "Calculating Infinity" by The Dillinger Escape Plan) and I never ever looked back. I figure there's no point in creating an "easing in" based on that, if you hear something and you'll love it then you'll love it. Anyway, these are my absolute favorite albums from the heavier side of my collection (you might hate some after 7 seconds, but maybe there's something for you):

Those are essential heavy albums that are always must-have for me.

Edit: If I've completely failed you, I highly recommend giving http://www.music-map.com/ a spin, you enter the name of an artist that you know you're already into and you'll get a lovely web of artists that are worth giving a try based on what you know you like, and what I like best is that the outer edges of the web become somewhat similar but different enough to pull you out of a comfort zone that can become a rut.

Don't have much to add, save for this: Devin Townsend is the fucking man. While not strictly metal all the time, his works over the last two decades range from stuff like this:

Which is not metal, by any means. To this:

Which is metal as fuck.

Also, Strapping Young Lad, his band from the late '90s to mid '00s, is some fantastic stuff:

Finally, just so I can stop brown-nosing Devin, I also suggest a little band by the name of The Sword:

And here's their excellent cover of Cheap Sunglasses, just because:

Just keep listening to new bands and sounds and eventually you will find more stuff that suits your tastes. I personally would recommend Gojira, Mastodon, Opeth, Lamb of God, Tool, Meshuggah, Slayer, Animals as Leaders, Between the Buried and Me, Sylosis, Cynic, Machine Head, The Ocean, Rammstein...

Also, you should totally get into black metal. It is a hell of a path to go down, and you will never escape, but it really is worth it. :D

No mention of Ministry so far, the godfathers of industrial metal? If you like some good god loving, clean and lighthearted christian metal music, I recommend this. Hehe.

No one has mentioned Christian Metal bands yet. I'm not going to judge your deviant taste in music for liking it. I can only think of a couple of Christian Metal bands. Stryper and Petra. This one is my favorite just for the title alone.

Those are some pretty excellent black metal recommendations (kudos for knowing who Midnight are), but don't you think that's a few too many recommendations to be giving all at once? To anyone interested in black metal, I'd recommend starting out with Emperor, Dissection and Bathory.

I find the amount of false metal being listed off in this thread to be mildly disheartening. Maybe I'm just getting old. Lousy kids and your music.
Just trying to give a good, wide taste of what the genre has to offer. I came to the genre through Weakling and Burzum, myself.

And yeah, death to false metal posers, metal 4 lyfe. :p

Pro-tip. If anyone tells you to ignore a genre of metal, ignore that request. If I would have listened to that "advice", I would have never found my favorite genre of music. Not saying you'll be the same way, but at least check it out and see if you like it.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Metalcore when it comes to Metal. Some of my favorites would be,

Now, onto Power Metal. Which I don't listen to as often, but still find frequent enjoyment in.

Anyway, that's all I've got the energy for. Enjoy and welcome to metal.

Scar Symmetry, Soilwork, Disarmonia Mundi are all incredible.

Not sure what those bands would even be classified as (melodeath? gothenburg metal?).
melodeath.
Yeah but then there's bands like Kalmah that are also classified as melodeath...and they are VERY different from Soilwork/etc. Subgenres within subgenres lol.

also, add The Stranded to that list. It's Claudio and Ettore's side project. Sounds like DM.
Thanks! I'll look into that, can't get enough of that amazing stuff...

Well I have nothing that was not already posted. On old school metal it simply does not get much better that Ozzy or Iron Maiden.
If you liked 40:1 that was already posted then just give Sabaton's entire library a listen. Hell I put a mix of their music on when I game.

For more melodic stuff, Dream Theater is a good choice as well. One of their songs was suggested on page one, look a little deeper on that same album Images and Words, all kinds of different styles there.

If I could make a humble recommendation?

I started reading Terrorizer Magazine two years ago when I wanted to get into Metal. It offered what I thought was a pretty engaging and comprehensive coverage of the latest metal, and it's roots and influences. It also offered a CD of songs from the latest metal bands featured therein- a great way to get a sampling of modern metal.

Surprised no one has mentioned Korn yet

and another one that has a similar sound Avatar

I tend to like groove metal and maybe nu metal but if you really want to get into metal you should just listen to as much of as possible figure out what you like. Because allot of the black metal stuff just feels like you got tiny demons in your ears ripping them apart.
