If you are a math-wiz and don't have any problems, ask him how he's doing in the class. You have that common ground to start a conversation with him. Just talk and see what happens. Don't try to bend his ear for a long time, just chat with him for a bit that first time.
Then, if you liked what you heard, talk to him more after the next class. If you still like him after a few after-class chats, suggest that you get together for a study session or the like. If that goes well, ask the boy out!
