I think its a regional twist of jump(ing) the gun. I've heard it before.

Just tell him to google the phrase there's literally hundreds of pages using that idiom. There's even a website called jumpingtheshark.com

I did that too, he said he refuses to acknowledge its status as a real idiom until I find a Merriam Webster entry on it, hes ignoring page after page of google results.
He won't lose the bet in his eyes, might be best to let this one go!! He won't give in if he ignores cold, hard proof!

The phrase has a Wikipedia page that starts with "Jumping the shark is an idiom," so if he still refuses to acknowledge his loss, you should consider some new friends. If he just wants to see it mentioned on Merriam-Webster, give him this [http://www.merriam-webster.com/netdict/jump] link. The last entry is on jumping the shark. I'd still go with the getting new friends option though.

He's In denial as you're obviously right. I don't think they put pop culture references in the dictionary.

EDIT: ZOMG! Found it!

<url=http://www.askoxford.com/worldofwords/wordfrom/idioms/?view=uk>Link That's Oxford dictionary the definitive English language resource.

Perhaps he will recognize google.

"About 1,990,000 results (0.13 seconds)"

I'm guessing that he knows he's wrong but he's locked into the mindset that he has to be right, to avoid losing. Give it a few days and if he still doesn't, you'll have something to call back to at the least apt of situations until he finally gives.

Well, if he's being that anal about it, beat him with a Merriam Webster, take the 10 dollars, and link him to the Howard Stern show.

Honestly don't know how he hasn't heard of it though, it's not even a US only thing either, my uncle uses it all the time here in the UK.
