Anyways I have recently been on a samurai kick watching Kurosawa films and Lone Wolf and Cub so I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good Samurai Games? I'm pretty much itching for something fun to play with some cool sword mechanics but nothing too...weird. :p

Man, I haven't played a good Samurai game since Usagi Yojimbo for the C-64 [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_a4Ap_Mw9Q], and that was a rabbit. Apparently, Ninjas sold better.

In another month, a game called Afro Samurai [http://www.gametrailers.com/player/28746.html] based on an anime should come out which should be quite good.

I will have to give those a look. I've mostly been playing old DOS games like Shogun and Sword of the Samurai.

These might require an update, then - they're Ps2 and Ps3 titles.
Oh I have a PS2 though I don't have a PS3. My computer isn't that old either thanks to DosBox I can play some great old titles. :p

Well, the Onimusha series is a good bet for the PS2, there's quite a few of them, not all good, but a few are.

Onimusha 1, Way of the Samurai 1 and 2 on the PS2 are about as good as it gets. There's also Samurai Champloo, based on the anime of the same name, but I'm not sure if it was ever released in North America.

Bushido Blade 1 and 2
A PSX versus fighting game franchise by Squaresoft, the Bushido Blade series combined an excellent skill based combat mechanic with the visceral, flash of the blade, sudden death of old-school samurai movies. Using a body damage system to track hits meant if your arm is struck you lose use of it, hits to the leg cripple your movement, and a solid blow the head or body is fatal. AI matches are terse, forcing you wade through a series of disposable henchmen trying to conserve viable limbs before facing off against your real opponent, and the 2p matches alternate between lasting exactly 1.73 seconds(the time it takes Kaun's thrown spear to pierce your various important organs from a dead standstill) to nigh on a half an hour of back and forth as you run, jump, dodge, spin, throw each other subweapons back and forth, cut down bamboo and generally pretend to be Toshiro Mifune Jr. The 2nd stands out as one of the most memorable fighting game stories I can remember, particularly in that its actually told IN THE FRIGGING GAME instead of looked up in "Oh, so that's why" way from Wiki-fucking-pedia after you finish.

You can also drop a couple thousand and pick up a used arcade copy of Mazan: Flash of the Blade...

Thanks for all the information. I guess I am going to check out Way of the Samurai since it seems to be the most recommended. :)

The Onimusha series is awesome. (Not number 4 though (Dawn of Dreams.) There are two incarnations of the first game: Onimusha Warlords for the PS2 and Genma Onimusha for the Xbox. The Xbox version has greatly expanded gameplay and is a tougher game overall. If you've got both systems, get Genma over Warlords.

I especially like the time levels in Bushido Blade 2...people got pissed cause there were 1 hit kills (and sometimes your character would be moved by the computer into someone else's sword for a killing blow), but other than that I had a lot of fun with it.

There's a game I wish would come back for PS3

Samurai Warriors 2 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samurai_Warriors].

It's got more of you're average hack'n'slash game play mechanics, but is historically based in the Sengoku era of Japanese history with a wealth of 'real' characters & their stories.

Also game play [http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmQQsNMX280] is very arcadey, but it's such a blast deflecting & dodging bullets & slicing up cowboys.

It's made by the same people who made Way of the Samurai and I think the story is pretty good, with some good voice acting & characters. For example, the main character either speaks Japanese or poor, broken English with a heavy Japanese accent, it's not just some American voice actor, which I thought was a nice touch.

Watch Afro Samurai. That much samurai/Samuel L. Jackson in such a short time will short out the samurai appreciation lobe in your brain.

I recomend Sword of the Samurai. It's a pretty obscure PS2 game, but the gist of it is that you make your own Samurai, and then you train your way up to win a tournament hosted by the emperor. Fun times.
