Hullo all.

Anyone managed to do this successfully?

I've got a replacement 2.5" sata drive just waiting to be slotted into the PS3, but coming across a weird problem.

I've got a sata to usb adaptor thingy, which I can use successfully to access data from two 3.5" Sata drives I have, but not the new 2.5" one I've bought, or the one in the PS3 itself.

So I bought a wee caddy thing, especially designed for 2.5" Sata drives, but that doesn't work either.

Frustrating thing is that the drive appears as "external USB mass storage" in the 'safely remove hardware' bit, but isn't showing up on My Computer, etc.

I've tried this on three seperate machines - a 64bit Vista, a 32bit Vista and an XP machine, and all of them are doing the same thing - Windows is recognising there's a USB attachment, but isn't giving me access.

Did anyone come across this sort of thing before when upgrading their PS3 drive? Any solutions?

Maybe its data locked?

Or the OS system that the ps3 uses is incompatible with the windows.

One of the HDs is brand new, though. It's never been near a PS3 before - it's a Toshiba 250GB internal 2.5" Sata, so I don't think it's anything to do with the PS3 itself...

The PS3 only only uses the Fat32 format. Your HD is probably in NTFS format. You'll have to partition out a Fat32 section or reformat the entire HD.

I don't know if I've just not been clear in my original post, but the problem isn't to do with them being read by the PS3, but by a trio of PCs. Regardless of the drive formatting, they should surely show up in My Computer?

Wait, so the Toshiba one is not coming up?

Oh. Well your fucked then.

If you format it with the PS3, both the PS3 and the PC should have no problem recognising it.
The PC isn't recognising the one that's already in the PS3, tho...

One sec, why do you want the pc to read both hard drives?

Because I want the new one to have exactly the same contents as the old one - and backing it up through the PS3's backup system isn't an option because I've not got an external HD that it actually likes.

Wait, that is already an external HD on your PS3? Why not put the data there? You honestly don't need all of the info on your machine (just uninstall all of the games and kill the auto screenshots). And the beauty of the system, it has at least 2 USB ports so you could have two HDs hooked up at once.

The only external HD I have is NTFS format, and it's got about 350GB of stuff on it and I've nowhere else I can back that up to reformat it as FAT32. :(

Use the other USB port. Or unplug that one and put the new one there. I have disconnected and reconnected USB's from my PS3 multiple times and it works fine. We even had two different external HDs on it once and it was able to read them both at the same time.
