I've been thinking of doing this post for awhile. We all listen to music (at least I hope we all do), and I'm sure we have all heard a band or song and thought "I wish I could find more music that sounded like this". So the challenge here is to post songs that sound like the original posters song.

I love this song, and most of Opeth's music, and I know that there is other music like this out there, but I have no idea where to look. Anyone have any ideas?

I don't wanna destroy this thread, but uhhh... http://www.pandora.com/
That doesn't work outside the USA
Why is that? Legal issues?

Anyway, I'll edit in music in a minute...

Sounds like a good idea, here's my contribution, the awesomeness that is Symphony X:

I can't think of anything that Symphony X has written that I haven't enjoyed.

Pandora gave me Jason Mraz on a D12 Station. I don't listen to Pandora much anymore.

If someone could tell me anywhere besides on a Pandora station I could find "I'm Alive" by John Oszajca, I would appreciate it.

Also, I need to find drum n' bass bands besides Pendulum. Anyone have a favorite?

No one is similar to opeth. Try nevermore, if you like guitar Jeff Loomis is the best there is.

To the OP, may I recommend Agalloch? Similar desolate vibe as Opeth, clean vocals mixed with savage yet emotive metal music. I'd be interested to hear what escapists think.
Edit: This is the radio edit, listen to their 10 minute+ material to get a real feel of what they do.

An epic song by A Perfect Circle called The Hollow. I prefer the acoustic version verses the original but they are both worth a listen to.

Insomnium will fuck you up. Hard.

Also, I might as well just throw out a couple bands that pretty much fly under the radar but are worth a listen: Red City Radio and Banner Pilot. A far cry from Opeth (vintage punk sound rather than IDunnoWhatTheFuckToCallIt Metal), but hey, the title told me to help others...so consider yourselves well and truly helped.

i recommend the Gorillaz. they have a good variety and they have a big bass and drum song, "68 state" i believe. believe me, you'd like them.

Try the following:

Dissection, Morbid Angel,Comus,Deep Purple,King Crimson,Anekdoten,Edge Of Sanity, Porcupine Tree, Camel,Anglagard, Pentangle, Coroner, Pink Floyd, Katatonia, At The Gates.

All of these show through once in a while in Opeth's music.
The point was I wanted to hear a song like this one, not Opeth's influences. I am familiar with all of these bands, but Patterns in the Ivy II is a great song and I was hoping to find more songs that sound like this song, not other Opeth songs.

I'm pretty good at finding music on my own. Wilco and Spoon are among my favorites. People here tend to like metal at an extraordinarily high proportion. I hate the genre (and yes I've listened to a decent range of it), so would be surprised to find good recommendations for my tastes here.

I'm kindof tempted to post a song by Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart or Animal Collective just to dick around with people.
Animal Collective has their moments, both in being great and being annoying. Tom Waits is amazing, though. "Step Right Up" is some good stuff.
