Hello all, I am looking to buy Oregon Trail II and the original Roller Coaster Tycoon to recapture some old memories. Alas, I run on an Alienware m11x which has no cd drive. Without shelling out $30 on an external drive (which would cost more then both games combined and doubled)can these games have their files easily transferred over to a USB?

I assume most of the annoying security features in cd/dvds today were not present when these were made.

How the hell can that even be called a gaming laptop if it doesn't have an internal drive? Especially at Alienware prices...

Can't help though, I was just shocked. Sorry for raising your hopes.

Daemon tools will create a fake optical drive that you can mount CD/DVD images to. However, many newer DRM schemes really don't like it when they seem Daemon tools is present on a computer.

Yeah, you need to make a disc image, although that still requires access to a computer with a CD drive. There are workarounds to any game that detects Daemon tools and shuts down because of it[footnote]most of them don't detect the program so much as the SCSI drives it emulates, and recent versions of the program have an alternate type of emulated drive to get around these things. That particular bit of copy protection hoses people with real SCSI drives, incidentally[/footnote]. I wouldn't use Daemon Tools itself to make the actual copy, though, unless you want to shell out for the paid version. I can't remember what program you need to use off hand (I haven't made an ISO in at least 6 months, I don't do it often and when I do it's mainly so I don't have to worry about disc checks on super old games), but if you search around to find out what programs you can use to make an ISO, you'll find something. Daemon tools works for mounting the actual images.

ImgBurn is what I use for burning CD/DVDs. It can also take the down as images, which you can then mount on Daemon Tools or Alcohol 52% - both are free, both work. I personally prefer Daemon Tools, however I've also used the other one. Whatever floats your boat.

Alternatively, if you really want to use the USB as a CD (for whatever reason), then Win32 Disk Imager should be able to do that, you'll just need a disk image (duh), again, you can use ImgBurn for that. Win32 Disk Imager pretty much turns the USB into the CD. But if you use that, get a hold of BootIce, in order to restore the USB to normal (otherwise, it would be shrunk down to fit only the data from the image).
