My friend has been attempting to sell a katana for several months now. He really needs the money to move out but we're struggling to get anywhere with it. Ebay so far has had multiple people watch the listing but nobody puts in an offer on the buy it now OBO or bid on it once.

What we know about the sword is the forger often sells them for over 2000 each, it's incredibly well made, very sharp, very well kept and cleaned every week, and we're offering free 2 day shipping.

We'd appreciate any help.

I don't have much experience with those types of swords or eBay in general, but here's my constructive critics from looking at the advert:

How can it be "New: A brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item..." if it's cleaned every week?

Surely by virtue of the fact that it's unpacked and cleaned every week means it's not "brand-new, unused and unopened".

Another thing that struck me is that on the zoomed in photograph, there appears to be marks/scratches/imperfections or residue left over from the rigorous cleaning regime, which seems contrary to the "brand-new, unused and unopened" description.

Perhaps interested parties are also noticing this and noticing how the zoomed in photograph seems to contradict the "brand new, unused and unopened" description, and therefore aren't confident in the trustworthiness of the sale.

Also the fact that you don't appear to be the original forger or an official reseller of the product casts some doubt on it's "brand new" status (because if you bought it once privately and are then selling it again, technically it is second hand and not "brand new" irrespective of its condition or use).

You could try re-advertising it as "like new", "very good condition" or "slightly used" and see if that changes anything (because even if you don't change the price, it may not appear like you're trying to pass off something that is used as new), and you could also try taking another photograph without a flash or without such a bright overhead light so it doesn't highlight so many of the marks on the blade, because even if that's what it is supposed to look like and has always looked like, it does seem a bit off putting (especially when the buyer only has the photograph to go by and can't physically inspect the blade to reassure themselves).

You could also add a line explaining that it's as good as new and practically unused, but isn't actually brand new and is being reluctantly sold due to circumstances.

Perhaps you should also expand on the free shipping and reassure buyers that it's not just going to be put in a box with "valuable sword" written on it and banged around by Fed-Ex, but will be packed very protectively and discreetly, as befitting a delicate $1300 item. Also what are the laws regarding private citizens without arms dealer licenses sending weapons across State lines?

P.S. I'm not accusing you of selling it in bad faith, but I'm just pointing out that's how it could appear to others due to the claims made by the new condition tag and the actual photos and product description.

That's fair. I wasn't sure how to describe it given it has been cleaned but it hasn't exactly been USED per se. Like, it's never been used to actually slice through anything as a demo or used in a show.
