So I was a huge fan of Sid Meier's Pirates! and played that to exhaustion. Recently I picked up AC:Black Flag and found the sailing to be extremely fun, but the game keeps yanking my chain to go do some AC nonsense and also I suspect it suffers from memory leaks, the thing becomes a slideshow after the first 30 minutes.

So can anyone help me with a good recomendation for a game that fleshes out the sailing bits in this one? I'd kill for a Pirates! with the Black Flag engine :(

All the Port Royale games are fun, but they're less about being a pirate yourself and more like Mount and Blade in the Caribbean. Might still be worth checking out since they're all dirt cheap now.

Speaking of Mount and Blade in the Caribbean, there is an official mod on Steam for it. The mod is called Caribbean [http://store.steampowered.com/app/293010/] and currently cost fifteen dollars. Most reviews seem popular, pointing out some bugs and features they'd like included in the final release. Game is early access by the way.

Pixel Piracy is fairly recent. It's a 2D roguelike where you manage a pirate crew as its captain and fight other 2D ships and their crews and go plundering and such. Once you foul up and all your murderin' crew get what they deserve, you start a new one.

I own it, but I haven't really given it any time. It took me longer than 10 minutes to get the grasp of the controls, so I went to play Borderlands 2 instead. And now I'm playing Fallout:NV. So many games to play, damn Steam.

The Sea Dogs, Pirates of the Caribbean and Age of Pirates series by Akella may interest you. I've only played Pirates of the Caribbean myself, but the rest of the series seems quite similar. It goes very in-depth with the sailing and naval combat, far more than Black Flag ever did, and includes lots of mercantile aspects and keeping your crew happy and supplies stocked and such things. There's some land based exploration and combat as well, but the sailing/naval combat is the crux of it and it's incredibly detailed at that.

Might be worth a look.

Sid Meier's Pirates is pretty much the be-all-and-end-all. Its existence is why there aren't many pirate games around, because they aren't needed.

I suppose you could count Risen 2, although the only pirate-y thing about it is the theme. Risen 3 has some sailing.

That looks awesome. I had no idea it even existed. And at first I was all FIFTEEN DOLLARS FOR A MOD WHAT but it looks like it has a whole new combat system for boats and stuff, which is pretty rad.

A little off topic, but you might want to check your video card temperature. You could be overheating, but not to the point of shutdown.

Uncharted Waters: New Horizons. I didn't play it back in the day and didn't find it until I was checking out some old SNES roms. That game is one of the most amazing Pirate games I've played, next to Sid Meier's Pirates. I like that you're not limited to just the Caribbean, but have the whole world to explore.

It was released on Genesis/SNES/PC - I would recommend the SNES version due to the better music.

I would recommend a 2d game named Tradewinds . There are many versions of the game . You play as a captain , completing quests , destroying pirate ships , buying better ones , etc . Quite a fun game .
Its an old flash game about being a pirate/merchant wich soon turned into a full blown franchise in its own right. All of them were all quite fun and i always enjoyed them when i was younger.

The first Tradewinds that ever came out gives you the experience of what it would be like to be a merchant. Tradewinds 2 However still gives you the same chances and opportunities of being a merchant, however it becomes alot harder, as it gives you storylines to follow, and revoking the ability to make a fleet. Tradewinds Legends gives you back the fleet options however it limits your ship count to 8. Tradewinds Caravans gives you the opportunity to become a merchant that walks the silk road, your caravan count can only be a maximum of 15. Tradewinds Odyssey gives you the tradewinds experience inside of greek mythology.

Here is the steam link for the trailers --> http://store.steampowered.com/app/36100/

Lots of suggestions to check out, thanks everyone!

I have to look into them in detail, but at first glance I haven't seen that visceral 'sailing' feeling I get from AC4. Call me petty, but I think it's actually the fact that you feel the waves. It's such a tiny detail but it makes the whole thing come to life. I'll check the gameplay of these games closer, though.

There's an old PS2 and Xbox game that I thought was a lot of fun called Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat. It's not quite a sandbox but it's pretty open and I really like it. Plus you can do ship battles with friends in local multiplayer. Don't expect realism though, the ship fights are kind of arcadey and the sword fighting is a little simplistic. Not that those are inherently bad things, I think the game is pretty good.

Also it's a very long game and it gets rather hard later.

Not a sailing game, but Pirates Vikings and Knights II is a free game on Steam with first-person melee combat between, well, Pirates, Vikings, and Knights. It's really fun game with one of the best melee systems in a first person game.

I LOOOOOOVED New Horizons! :D It was one of the few games of that generation that I played as much as I played Sid Meier's Pirates Gold. IMO, it was one of the few games that could hold a candle to Pirates in any way, and still holds that lofty position all these years later.

Corsairs was a fun game back in the day, it's now avaliable on GoG for $10.
Port Royale games are as others said also an option.
Unfortunately there aren't many pirates games that I know of, most have been listed above. Tortugla was a fun one similar to AC4.

There's a new pirate RPG coming out in a few days on Steam. Raven's Cry: http://store.steampowered.com/app/281130/

To be honest, it doesn't look that good. But you might want to keep an eye on it.

Just an FYI, the original Age of Pirates is not worth getting.
Age of Pirates 2 is great though, but only if you can stomach its (many) flaws and quirks (including but not limited to bugs, terrible translation, difficulty being all over the place, occasional tediousness, lack of a decent tutorial, poor melee combat and graphics that were years behind when the game released). If it clicks though it might never leave your hard drive.

Compared to Black Flag it's much slower, infinitely less polished and significantly less action packed and visceral. It's also significantly deeper and way more expansive.
