So I've been getting this sudden urge to search for a particular screensaver I remember seeing all the time on computers when I was a little kid. It was an aquarium screensaver with those cheap little animated fish swimming around it in that really corny, brightly colored setting.

I'm trying to find this screensaver, so I can install it on my computer for the sake of nostalgia, but I'm coming up dry in my hunt. Does anyone know how I can come across this screensaver (preferably for free) so I can find and install it on my windows 8 computer?

This one?

If so it's from Windows 98. I can't offer any more advice on how to get it than that, I'm afraid.

Yeah, it was integrated into an old version of Windows. Not sure if it's even possible to rip it out and reuse it in a newer version.

In any case, screensavers seem to have gone out of vogue in recent times, since newer versions of Windows don't come with very many of them (whereas the old versions of Windows had heaps of fancy screensavers included with them).

Eh, the best was the one where you are running a round a Wolfenstein 3D style maze. That was so cool at the time.

This. Sure, it was the first screensave I ever saw, but damn was it awesome to look at...

Plus, didn't it go through every nook and corner before proceeding to the next maze?

IIRC, it went all over, then climbed the wall and ran across the ceiling, down it all again upside down.

Of course, upside down looked much the same as normal, but still.

Oh shit! That's right! Whenever it passed by a certain object that wasn't the exit object, it would totally do that!

Fuck! Now, I miss it even more!

The only screensavers worth having were the pipes or the light-speed one. I could stare at them for hours.

That's mostly because LCD screens don't suffer from burn in the way CRTs did and plasma's do.

There are data packs out there with all the old Macintosh and Windows screen savers, but I honestly wouldn't trust half of them. For a very long time I looked for an old screen saver of a little race car that would do various jumps and some of the time it wouldn't make it, but the only person to send me a link to a data pack had quite a few .dll and .exe files inside along with the screen savers.

Also because computers tend to just turn the monitor off when not using it nowdays anyway.

I pity all of you, for you clearly never knew Sierra's legendary Johnny Castaway Screensaver, GREATEST SCREENSAVER OF ALL TIME.

Probably for the best, since it's a bit wasteful to burn CPU cycles in order to display a fancy animation that only serves to distract and/or won't be seen by anyone anyway.

Better to just power off the monitor altogether instead.

Sooo, there's no way to get this?...
Seems unlikely. Even if you did find a download link for such a thing, I'd be very weary of it. Since screensavers contain executable code and can have nasty malware injected into them, even if they appear harmless at a glance.

Amen! This was really the best one, good times when we didn't have access to many games, and had fun with a screensaver... "Kids these days have it easy".

But I was also going to mention freaking Dancing Baby! That was the shit. And I had a funny one for a long time, based on the Tyson vs Holyfield match. One was a big mouth full of teeth, and the other on an ear. Fun times.

Another dream dead, I guess....
