Here's How BioShock Would Look on CryEngine 3

Is a man not entitled to a fancy new engine?

Just in case you need another reminder of the unstoppable march of time and your own inescapable mortality, BioShock turns five years old this month. While it's still a gorgeous game, thanks mostly to Irrational's excellent design work, the Unreal 2.5 engine that powers it is starting to show its age. Scott Homer, an artist at Crytek UK, has whipped up a few shots of what the game might look like if it were running on the newer, fancier CryEngine 3.

The result? Prettiness.

There's no lighting or particle effects, so some of the much-praised BioShock atmosphere is missing, and it looks like the Splicers have broken out the mops and tidied up a little, but it's still impressive work. The screenshots actually seem closer to the game's CGI trailer [http://youtu.be/Ymg2HzHF9-4] than the actual finished product.

The smiley face on the Big Daddy's knee is a new addition. It's actually the logo of the Polycount Forums, [http://www.polycount.com/forum/] a popular digital art forum, the members of which crank out stuff like this all the time. [http://www.polycount.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=64]

... Can we get a full port of Bioshock to Cryengine 3? I want to punish my graphics card while reblowing my mind, as is the case every time I replay Bioshock.

No problem, much better that way :)

I'm pretty sure it'll be fine since you're only speaking the truth. Except I made another very important edit.

It doesn't look all that different from original, apart from maybe antialiasing. Maybe if I saw it in motion I would be more impressed.

I think what you were meant to say was;

"Dear 2K and Crytek, ... Would you kindly get a full port of Bioshock to Cryengine 3? We want to punish our graphics cards while reblowing our minds, as is the case every time we replay Bioshock. -sincerely everyone."

While it looks nice, I'd hate to play it in CryEngine 3.

If you jack an entire game from one engine to another, it won't feel the same.
The physics engine would be different, the interface would be coded different and player interactions would feel off. You might not notice it immediately because the developers would liase to get capture the feeling as best they could, but a niggling feeling whilst you play would tell you that "something doesn't feel right" and I'd hate to play through BioShock with that feeling always lingering around. It would kill the immersion even with those great graphics.

But nevertheless, it's just an artist impression and a very nice looking render at that!

developers dont want fancy graphics.
they want faster iteration times.
unreal is unchallenged in that field.
crytek you are doing it wrong.

...That's it? Maybe I'm confused, but it doesn't look all that impressive to me.
My thoughts exactly. I think that's mainly because they picked some of the most drab locations in Rapture. So much to choose from and they go for some dark hallways? Damned shame. I'd love to see what they'd do with Fort Frolic, Arcadia or the Farmer's Market.

Yes well with the shots so small you can barely make out the difference, also being still shots only this means you can put billions of polygons into a scene and leave it to render days at a time, quite a leap from 0.017 seconds the actual game has time to do this while still managing the rest of it.

Screen shots are cute, but they are far from a working game.

Ehm, I don't think those screenshots look significantly better than the original, mostly because BioShock did not stand out because of the technical prowess of its visuals. It was the artistic direction that made people go 'wow' over its visuals, not the quality/quantity of its pixel shaders.

I can discern no difference between these shots and the original BioShock. But then again, I'm not a graphics whore and I never really notice if I'm using 2xAA or 16xAA or vanilla textures or a high-res texture pack...

Just give me decent graphics and good gameplay.

I can't tell the difference between them and the original Bioshock. Might be more impressive if it was in motion. But Bioshock still looks fine.

Unf. That's a mighty fine pretty we got here. Reckon we could get a port or maybe someone in the community could try doing a full conversion or mod it? Probably be ridiculous amounts of work but damn that looks so nice.
