Huh. That's a bit shit, isn't it.

And I liked Death Magnetic, and I even grew to tolerate St Anger.

Oh look, here come the Metallica haters. Just one bad song, and everyone explodes. No, I don't give a shit whether or not you hated everything after the black album. So why don't you go listen to Megadeth like you always gloat you will, and I'll be over here, listening to both bands.

Jesus Christ. That was truly fucking awful, and this is coming from someone who liked 'Reload'.

This festering boil on the ass of music almost makes St Anger sound good in comparison.

That picture is great. Are you sure this isn't something Mustaine HAS put together to troll Metallica?

Because damn this is shit.

After a few listens that is what I took away from the song. Give me the album, and I'll probably be able to write a thesis analyzing its various elements in creating cohesive whole.

As I said, the majority of people are going to trash this (largely due to monolithic status of Metallica) without any appreciation and consideration of the art. A lot of people have come here and commented without any idea of what Lulu is, and have little knowledge of what Metallica is as a musical outfit and have shown an extraordinarily narrow mindset towards music. This isn't even a Metallica album, so comparisons to Load, St. Anger or Death Magnetic don't really apply.

I found the lyrics suitably poetic, textured and emotive. The riffs perfectly complemented the narrated themes of demented, twisted, hysterical, yet a clinical whirlwind of control. Of a great rush of ill-will towards a powerless victim of expectation. Reed's narrated delivery is precision, gathering pace and intensity as the song builds to its final, cathartic crescendo. So no, this isn't an 'over analysis'. I genuinely find 'The View' to have great artistic merit and by stating that I have manufactured meaning from this piece says that you have 'judged' me.

So much for non-prejudice.

I honestly don't have an issue with people disliking something. I've read some well-articulated opinions that dissent. But this thread, for the most part, is a giant spunking contest for 'musical' lemmings. This community can do better than 'Blabbermouth'.

Someone actually called that song an artistic masterpiece. I normally accept other peoples opinions towards music but what the hell man????

OT I'm not the biggest fan of Metallica. I like the early albums and "Fuel" from Reload. Death Magnetic was also pretty cool but this song is just shit. No need to remind me why Megadeth and Anthrax are so much better when being talked about the Big 4.

Good God that was dull. I really can't add anything that hasn't already been said, Lou Reed sounds positively apathetic, that riff playing throughout was utterly interchangeable and even that guitar solo was completely disposable it's just so derivative overall. Look, I actually thought Death Magnetic was pretty good which I'm sure will invalidate my opinion with many of you and I understand that this isn't a Metallica album, but it just sounds as though no one involved is even trying with this production.

If you're referring to me, I made no such claim. I commented that its elements were 'masterfully' pulled together; I can hear its roots in impressionism and theater, infused with poetry and music. Everything I know about Lulu points to it being an unconventional take on the concept album design, meaning that none of the songs are intended to be felt outside of their context. This makes it a lot harder to sell to people who don't understand its conceptualizations, and are expecting a generic Rock/Methul album, for lack of a better term.

I really enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to hearing the album in its entirety because it really is a complex and challenging body of work it draws from.

I lend no credence to the label 'masterpiece', though. It's something two-bit marketeers use to sell creative 'products' to sheep, so you won't ever hear me lay any such claim.

Okay, I'm sorry but I honestly can't find one single redeemable quality in this song.
Not one.
The vocals sound completely apathetic and droning, that stupid guitar riff that goes on for the song's entirety is something someone could think up in about 10 seconds and the lyrics themselves sound like... fuck I can't even think up a proper comparison to accurately convey how terribly written they are. Poetic? Sure but there's such a thing as shitty poetry, then there's shit written by an angsty 12 year old who borders on being illiterate and that's what this sounds like.
No personal offense here. I can understand people's differing tastes but dear god this is outright laughable. I've shown this to about 6 people now and all of them either covered their mouths trying not to laugh or simply out of embarrassment.
This song sounds on par with something a shitty high school band came up with at the school's talent show.
I normally really dislike Metallica's pompous and OMG SUPAR SRYS attitude but this is, simply put, fucking terrible.

Fucking!

Bad!

Seriously, the best thing they come up with in the 90's was the second disc of Garage Inc. The one with al the covers recorded in the 80's.

Just like all the recent Metallica stuff it's long, drawn out and boring...matches them vocals quite well :p

Bet Dave Mustaine is laughing his pants off )
I bet he'll appreciate how much better he's done than them when he finishes his crack.

OP: Horrible, essentially just a bad EP.

That was horrible, still makes me laugh though because for along time the local rock station tried to play their last terrible album "Saint Anger" as a good album and tried their hardest to push it. Eventually after the contract for pushing it was out, the DJs started slamming it on air. I can't wait to see the cycle start again.

FUGHA!

That about sums that "song" up.

For those of you who had the misfortune to actually listen to that. Let me help you with your problem.

It's amazing how Metallica went from the fucking face of metal to the horrible parody of its former self it is today.

Okay, that is even worse than Shatner's version of Iron Man [http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=163056] which in my opinion is one of the worst covers I have ever heard. I mean, it's even worse than Angra's cover of Painkiller.

I shouldn't be surprised of Metallica sucking, they haven't been good in over 20 years, so they wouldn't suddenly change now.
Metallica is currently like Star Wars, the parodies seem actually better than the originals (Beatallica and Spaceballs)

This sounds like if you took Bob Dylan and Metallica, sucked all of the good bits out, and threw it in a blender full of trash. It's just so terrible.
