Hey Batman? Your wardrobe seems a little... dangerous.

Worst super hero costume? The original Robin.
While Batman makes sense in how he is psychological and black meaning he could sneak, Robin's costume makes no sense. It's bright and colorful making it difficult for him to sneak and the reason is it is based his gymnast uniform, that only he and Batman will know because of secret identities.
It's pointless.

If I became a super hero though. I'd fight crime in a full suit with a tie. If I had to wear a mask I'd just wear one of those theater masks. And possible a top hat. And if I decided to wear a top hat then I'd wear a cape.
But yeah suit and theater mask. Just for the style points.

I?m doing a bit of multi-tasking at the moment. In preparation of Batman: Arkham City being released sometime this month and doing a little research (and a LOT of procrastination), I?m playing Batman: Arkham Asylum but I?ve just had a though, ?Batman, your costume seems a little impractical.? Huge long cape that seems that it would get tangled somewhere, a face mask that seems like it blocks the view and really heavy looking armour... Okay, so maybe that last part ISN?T so bad.

Impractical costumes seem par for the course though! Capes, high-heel boots, awkward looking face-masks, none of it seems to make sense!

So, I ask, what is the worst costume any super hero has? And if you suddenly found yourself defending the planet from bad guys, what would your costume entail? Points for awesome names, too.
I'd be the Death Knight. No cape, just made armor, black high quality steel, designed to look like a skeletal bone armor, with kevlar lining underneath it, (Yes, im prepared for blades AND bullets) and a black bladed Scythe. Ohh, and of course, biological weaponized grenades! ;)

Practical? I'd say Juggernaut. His armor is big bulky and compliments his fighting style, i.e charging into people headlong.

Worst super hero costume? Just take your pick from any modern female Super Hero costume. Most likely they'll have a ton of cleavage, little-to-no practicality (Or sense for that matter) and look overwhelmingly stupid.

But then DC and Marvel's artists / writers seem to have adopted a "One Hand in Pants At All Times" policy.

Well, I can't really think of any truly impractical suits at the moment. Oh well, onto mine.

I'd probably just go with white hood, under a dark blue bullet proof vest.I'd have elbow pads, knee pad, and perhaps shoulder pads because "mama ain't raise no fool." Also, I'd wear blue goggles to cover my face and a carry around a bow staff. Plus, and I am picking a power, I'd have gravity manipulation. since all the decent gravity hero names have been taken, I'd probably just call myself Grav.

I would say the worst costume is Huntress from DC comic-

Sure she looks awesome and all but since she is night time crime fighter surely she would catch a cold? I just assume the temperature in DC comic is just warmer compare to real life so that she can fight crime and not catches a cold at all. Even exposing her stomach like that is just asking it to be a punching bag!

As for my costume it would just be a mixture of the typical spandex like materials (NOT skintight) and abit of Ironman armour (my power is armour related). I suppose the only problem I would face with my costume is my compact jetpack.
She at least is wearing flat boots and has pockets. I direct you to Silk Specter

No mask, 3 inch heeled boots, no pockets, and really bad materials.

The cape is actually for gliding down from long falls, as it straightens and strengthens when electricity runs through it.
Or something sciency Mr. Fox said..
And don't forget, most of his work is done by intimidation, so it's all useful really.

The idea is (for batman at least), the cape makes him bigger as he falls, making someone think that a demon is literally swooping from the sky to grab them and take them.

Its the same logic as making yourself look bigger to scare off a bear.

The common cold? I know, this isn't really the thing to get hooked up on, but you do not get sick from cold weather. The cold is a viral disease.
It was a figure of speak, you know what I mean. She is exposing alot of flesh for a superheroine who does some crimefighting in the night and we all how cold it is during the night (assuming this isn't summer night). It would be a going outside of the night wearing a t-shirt.

If real logic did apply to superhero logic than more superheroes and villains would have a thicker costume version during the Winter.

Another good thing about a cape (at least for someone like Batman) is that it's useful for stealth- it conceals the outline of his body, making it easier for him to lurk in the shadows without detection.

Not to mention that, Batman being... well, Batman, it's likely made of space-age materials that provide him with some protection against weapons and the elements.

I like Batman, but he's a complete fantasy character who could never exist in the real world. There's a reason why we don't have any high-profile masked crimefighters in real life. The concept simply doens't work beyond the boundaries of fiction. Batman's cool and everything, but his costume is completely impractical for fighting anything other than comic book bad guys.
You were wrong about one thing here: we actually do have real life high profile masked crime fighters. After Kickass came out, a whole movement of people who apparently got the exact opposite message that that and The Watchmen was supposed to send was created, and there are now groups of "superheroes" in pretty much every major US city. I wish I was making this up.

Very true.

For myself I'd go with S.W.A.T. style tactical gear (plus armour), with a ballistic mask.

I'd be less a 'superhero', and more just a straight 'vigilante'.

And do these people go out and routinely and succesfully apprehend muggers, foil large-scale drug operations, take down local crime lords and make the streets a safer place for all? Or do they just generally loiter around trying to look fantastic, and occasionally try and start a fight with someone? Because if it's the latter as opposed to the former, then they're not really superheroes, and my point still stands.

In Britain, there was a dude who used to get dressed up in a costume and go round with an angle-grinder destroying car clamps. That's kind of my point. Superheroes as we see them in comics and films simply can't exist. The kind of people who try and dabble in costumed antics in real life are either comic clowns looking to get a laugh, or disturbed individuals looking to start some violence. I'll wager that there is not a single individual in the world today comparable to the Batman from the comics: a ludicrously costumed individual who effectively takes on large-scale criminal operations and manages to outdo the police at their own game.

People are simply too fucked up for superheroics to ever really work. In comics, the only people who suffer mental diseases are the villains, and heroes never make errors of judgement or exhibit unsavoury character traits of their own. In the real world, (and in the words of Alan Moore) someone who dresses up as a bat and goes around beating up apparant criminals without any form of judicial process, and without any remorse is a bloody psychopath vigilante.
They don't bust up drug rings, but they actually do take down a lot of petty criminals. HBO did a documentary about it recently, and it's been getting little filler articles in newspapers for the last year or so. It's actually kind of fascinating; there's even people claiming to be supervillains now, although I have a feeling most of those are internet trolls who don't actually commit any crimes.

Edit: So to better answer your question, yes, they do apprehend a lot of muggers. That's about as far as they go, though.
