Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure which I think are the best handheld Sonic games
If you like Zelda, definitely get Spirit Tracks
And the Professor Layton games are brilliant

The Ace Attorney games are pretty cool, I recommend those.

They play very differently when compared to a "normal" game, but that doesn't mean that they're not fun as hell.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2, Disgaea DS and Final Fantasy: Four Heroes of Light. You will need nothing else.

Go ahead and get a used copy of SoulSilver or Heartgold to tide you over. You'll be able to transfer to Black/White, which itself is going to have only all new Pokemon straight from the start.

For RPG's Devil Survivor and Strange Journey are fucking awesome,so is DQ4 and Chrono Trigger.

YOu also can't go wrong with any of the Castlevania's or Ace Attorney games.
