Interesting. Also, another question, because Furries spend considerable time anthropomorphising animals, does that means that many view most non-human animals as falling within the same moral domain as people do? So, for example, are furries more likely than non-furries to be opposed to the use of non-human animals for commercial or research purposes?
It does indeed tend to fall that way, but again, furries really are a widely assorted bunch.

For me personally, you can anthropomorphize a fox all you want, but bring it in the house and it'll just pee and shit everywhere while tearing everything up. That sums up my view on animals IRL pretty well.
Why do you think furries get so much negative press in the media? It just seems like a fandom like any other to me, with lots of different types of people doing it for different reasons, as you keep emphasising.

It has to do with our history. At the time it started to become a thing, it was something a lot of people didn't understand. It also didn't help that the more... Uh... Neckbeardy types were more visible in the fandom back then since there weren't very many of us. It also doesn't help that the actually normal and pleasant furries don't usually talk about it at all, so you'd never even know they were one until they bring it up.

The sheer amount of cringe induced by the behavior of the more...vocal folks might also be a factor there.

Case in point:

I'd genuinely be surprised if social/developmental disorders like autism and aspergers weren't overrepresented in the fandom.

I do know that homosexuality and bisexuality are very much overrepresented though. Not sure what that means, if anything.

Regardless, some of the art is good. Most isn't. Ultimately, however, it's (hopefully) just another harmless outlet of expression for people.

Kinda like bronies. Or weebs. Or whovians. Or Supernatural fandom name here. Or Steven Universe weirdos. Or X group.

I have a question. Is your (or anyone's) fursona supposed to represent a similar, but idealised, version of yourself. And also, over time, does your own self-concept become more like that of your fursona? I was thinking that interacting with others as your idealised self might validate it and helping you to internalise it as part of yourself.
It varies, as she said. For me, I consider my main character (I hate the term "fursona", I have half a dozen characters) is a personification of my feminine side. And yes, I also have a character for my masculine side. And a few other aspects of my personality for other characters. But that's just me.

It IS true that many furries are probably more favorable towards animals than others, in that you'd sooner find a furry who would have a pet fox than a non-furry, and would probably be more willing to donate towards charities or other causes related to animals or such, but it's not to an exceeding amount.

HOO BOY. OKAY. SO. Pulling this story from what I was told by a friend of mine who's been in the fandom for DECADES. Literally decades, plural. But here's how I heard it.

So, way way back, there was a furry convention... one of the first. I forget where it was, but it was very small. Small enough that the organizers were worried about the size. Of the two organizers, one of them said he could get other people to come to fill it out. Those people that showed up? Hard Gay BDSM fans. They showed up at the con and... well, they filled it out a bit.

After a year or two of this happening, the people showing up there got creeped out by these guys. The less extreme types left, and many artists who just did mild stuff left as well, leaving the artists and fans who were into that kind of hardcore gay BDSM stuff. Or the artists who figured, hey, money is money.

And then MTV showed up, and did a special on the "Furry Fandom" that took the information from this convention. As you can imagine, it really painted the fandom in a very poor and inaccurate light (especially as the people at the convention didn't treat the hotel very well).

And THAT was the first public exposure the Furry Fandom really had.

It's been an uphill battle since then, especially after CSI did a "Furry" episode which REALLY painted the fandom as a bunch of sexual deviants in ugly costumes and... ugh, trust me, the episode is atrocious. But that really helped solidify the way the fandom was perceived for quite a while, and has become infamous in the fandom because of it.

There's a reason why furries tend to greatly distrust the media, and why many of us are VERY careful about how we act in public. Hell, Anthrocon specifically screens any media that comes in because they want to keep out the reporters trying to get in to do a quick piece on how weird and freaky and DEGRADING the Furry Fandom is, just look at them EEWW!!!

Just because this was brought up, have I got a document for you and anyone interested... a scientific study done on the Furry Fandom, that provides all sorts of demographics and information on it, as well as trying to extrapolate what information they can out of the data. Quite fascinating, in a way.

And don't mind the title... Furries kinda love puns, in my experience.

Wat. Those strikes have been on my account for literal years. How long does it take them to be removed.
The Official Appeals system broke down long ago. Computer stuff, etc....

That is precisely why I posted a Stickied thread at the top of the GD and Off Topic forums: So that every poster who had a Health Bar that hadn't been properly reduced could request a correction.

I'd add that perhaps one thing that puts people off about the ones that choose to dress up as their avatar is that some of the suits look a little bit creepy to the average person. Like a less extreme version of the giant rabbit in Donny Darko...
