You mean Cracked was humbled by the presence of the Escapist in their article?
Nope. Just that the site became a point of interest for 'Topics that are Guaranteed Flame Wars.'

No, it isn't. You can conventionally travel at 0.99999999999999C, but you can't go 1.0C. C meaning speed of light.

So, first things first: We were the only guys who didn't invoke Godwin's law. Yay.
Secondly:

0.999...=X
X=0.999...
0.999...=0.999
X=X
BUT.
0.999...=1
0.999=X=1=X
Thus,
X=/=X.
In conclusion:

For some reason writing that out made me laugh like a maniac. That's not a good sign.

Haha, that was pretty funny. I didn't know there were flame wars about dog poop, much less about vegetarians with a healthy dose of racism.

So does 0.8 = 1 as well? Or does that = 0.9 which in turn = 1?

I am no good at maths but to me something is not something else.

Yay for being quoted on another site!
Well if there is an infinite number of nines then there is no value small enough to add to it to bring it up to 1. Therefore, 0.9r = 1

0.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 ad infinitum = 1.

Think of 1/3. It's equal to 0.333333333333333333333333333333333 ad infinitum.

1/3 * 3 = 1.

0.3 ad infinitum * 3 = 0.9 ad infinitum.

Thus, 0.9 ad infinitum = 1.

Not to flame or anything, it's just an explanation of why math seems to break logic.
I will take your words for it that you are correct 'cos like I said me and maths are like the KKK and black people, math is all like "hey, how you doing?" and I'm all like "GAAAHHH!", me and numbers don't get along ... I am ok with algebra though (on a quite basic level).

(Just to clarify, I am not racist)

To me it's like the thing with absolute zero, nothing can be absolute zero, they are always some tiny degree off. They can't just move absolute zero up a few points of a degree and say "tah dah! We did it!", to me it's 0.something it's not 1 'cos 1 is one, 1 can't be anything other than 1.

0.9 is as much 1 to me as 1.1 is ...

Now I am thinking of that star trek episode when the female captain is explaining to Da Vinci (?) why he can't understand her world, by telling him that a sparrow could never understand Da Vinci's world ... I am that sparrow.

Your logic both confuses and enrages me.

Good show :p

And PLEASE let's not start this discussion again, it was bad enough last time...

I only come back daily out of habit, and even then it's mostly to read the news. The general attitude of this place just infuriates me nowadays.

Huh. Y'know, I'd have thought we'd be mentioned for circumcision, not does .9 to infinite=1, which to my knowledge has no practical application.

Scientists just proved particles can travel faster than light and 0.99999999999999 =/= 0.9r

I have seen the light.

Also, while we're on the subject of maths, I made a graph! Score it for accuracy, or, you know, don't!

Hm. Not bad, fairly accurate, but you need more Imperial Manticores on pool floats.
And there's also a variable chance that the user in question will simply say "Fuck this noise" and find a different board instead of raging against the mods/getting banned.

Pretty much. Plus this kind of unwritten rule that practically every thread has to be met with rudeness, or answering a question as if the answer is blindingly obvious and the OP is just too stupid for us, blatantly.

Indeed It'd be hilariously Ironic if we were to start a a flame war with such and silly argument while laughing at the things that can cause us to start a flame war.
