To aid me in my argument, I point to "To Kill a Mocking Bird".

Atticus: "Don't say (racial slur), Scout. That's common."

Scout: "But that's what everybody at school says."

Atticus: "From now on it'll be everybody less one."

Atticus says this because he doesn't want Scout to sound ignorant and just do what everyone else does.

To me, when people like mainstream, this is how they appear to me. Ignorant. Too ignorant to know that there is music out there that actually has a purpose other than making money and appeals to their interests. Or just too lazy to look for it. Either way these are qualities I greatly frown upon.

Another good example would be your message at the end there. You want people to quit being lazy and read the whole thread that you worked so hard on. Well I (and musicians) want people to quit being lazy and find something that is full of hard work, and actually made for the MUSIC, not to exploit today's young people and make millions of dollars.

But let it be known I have nothing against you, as you were intelligent enough to make this well-written thread. Unfortunatly, the same cannot be said for a lot of other people who listen to mainstream.

I too enjoy mainstream music and find it quite aggravating when people tell me I'm gay or retarded because I bought both of Lady Gaga's albums. Everyone is entitled to there own opinion and musical taste and I respect that. But that doesn't mean you should bash someone else is opinion into a mess of bloody pulp. either keep it to yourself or express in a tasteful manner.

For example. I personally don't like [insert band or artist here] but I understand that some do.
I prefer [insert band or artist here] because {insert reason why here].

See. Is that so hard?

And this can apply to anything. not just music. just use the formula above.

Dear OP;
If you like Popular music then you like what others have decided you should like. It implies you have limited knowledge of other musical genres, or that you are simply not interested or invested enough in music as a leisure activity to refine your tastes any further.
All this is fine and doesn't cause any problems until you start doing what you are doing now, giving yourself a sense of entitlement. You should accept that if you rarely endeavour to discover genres and artists beyond what you hear on heavily commericalised radio stations then you shouldn't give an opinion in music discussions the same way someone who has never seen a soccer game and only owns a "Gunners" coffee mug should not try to give an informed opinion in a "Manchester vs Arsenal" discussion. Despite the popular idiom, everyone is not "entitled" to their opinion.

Honestly, you people rank alongside "Avatar for best movie ever" and "Twilight were good books!" and your supposed inability to understand why people might have a problem with *shudder* .......Lady GaGa..... almost convinced me that you are a troll.

Things generally become popular because alot of people enjoy them, and rather than going to the painstaking effort of finding new bands with unique styles, pop music is readily available and catchy. Some of it is also good, really, give it a chance.

If you believe that people only like Pop because they should, then perhaps you should consider the opposite can also be true. You feel that liking something mainstream endangers your "individuality" which probably also consists of silly haircuts and girls jeans a few sizes too small.

Also, everyone is entitled to an opinion, although some opinions are vastly better constructed than others, built on fact rather than personal predjustice.

Have a nice day.

I don't care what you listen to, I just severely dislike pop music. By lumping us all into the category of mainstream music haters, you are doing unto us what we supposedly do unto you.
I'm not lumping you all into the same category, that's just you jumping to conclusions. If I disliked everyone here I wouldn't come here. However, I have witnessed first-hand the music elitism (as someone else here quite eloquently described it) and in this very thread you can even see personal attacks and insults at me and my preferred genres. I think speaking out about this was justified after everything I've read on this forum.

There are plenty of friendly people here at the Escapist. Sadly plenty of not-so-friendly people too.
Fair enough. I try to avoid personal insults, but I'm not going to hide the fact that I genuinely dislike pop/rap/country music. I wouldn't say I dislike all mainstream music, as I haven't listened to it all, but I also can't say that I care for what I have heard.

The reason why i don't listern to popular music isn't because of the cheasy melody and vocals it because of one thing "Lyrics". literially around 90% of popular music revolves around the theme of love (and other love related subjects such as break up/hook up, distress in love, celebration of love ect). Rock music however has all these subjects and more. Going futher in the lyrics than popular music would dare to tackle with issues such as anger, isolation, lonelyness, drug addiction hell even sexual abuse and the music relates to me and how i am feeling and if it does that then it's achieved what it has set out to do. Most People nowadays have seem to forgotten about lyrics in favour of catchier melodies and to be honest it's kinda sad.

... bad mainstream music is bad... good mainstream music is good...
there's just more freely available mainstream music
so there's more bad mainstream music...
and more good mainstream music...

but because a lot of the stuff on the radio is bad [as the radio plays all mainstream music, not just the good or the bad] many people presume that all mainstream music is bad.
lady gaga is good. i dont love her, wouldnt listen to her often, but she's good enough, musically. but there's also a lot of shite on the radio. i'm not gonna start mentioning particular bands/musicians, that's not why i'm posting.
i think most people just dont like mainstream music because you hear the bad stuff. like it gets circulated, unlike bad metal, alternative or whatever, which gets filtered out as its main medium is through fans. fans wont pass on bad music, but the radio will. and as the radio only plays mainstream music, it's the only bad music that lasts in the world.
but the good stuff does too.

rambleramble

i lost track of my thought half way through there, but i think i got my point across =]

I'm very heavy into music and whilst I see your point and the mainstream music at the moment is certainly a lot better than it was a few years ago, I still see why people will tear your opinion to shreads.

Basically you're a casual music fan, the stuff that bubbles beneath the surface tends to be much better, when you look at bands that have made it big 9 times out of 10 their stuff was a lot better than it was before they had their big breakthrough, I think Modest Mouse are the latest example of this where the edgey and unpredicatable sound has been stripped to its bare, it's not bad but it sort of shows what the mainstream MAINLY is, music stripped down to it's bare bones, the isn't enough to warrant repeat listens and this only becomes worse as music played on the radio is designed to be played on a radio... car stero, those cheap things, so everything is compressed to fuck which makes it seem like it has more pressence on a cheap piece of kit but as soon as you venture into the headphone realms from brands such as Bose and Senhieser you get a fucking headache, no this isn't opinion, it isn't the music is bad, it's fact... it's all compressed to one frequency, one range and one volume so everything stands out so it lacks any depth or dynamic which causes headaches after a short amount of listening time (Flaming Lips are an example of a more credible band that have been recently let down by this)

Whilst I'd say Lady GaGa, Rhianna, Justin Timberlake & Girls Aloud are certainly the best things to happen to pop music recently, Kanye West & Jay Z pretty much signle handedly saved us from gangsta rap saturation with interesting and diverse beats, I'm not a big advocate of pop, but do you know what REALLY gets me down, it's not the pop acts, they know what they are.

It's those fucking faux alterrnative bands like Papa Roach, Owl City (most recently), and most the stuff played on Kerrang and MTV2 in general... and those 'Indie' bands that came out about a year or 2 ago which now seems to be 'indie' dance they discredit entire scenes, and thats unforgivable. But it's not so much the bands, it's the people who turn a nose down to pop music who like EXCLUSIVELY bands such as 'Nickelback' 'Foo Fighters' 'Hinder' all that generic (understandably foo's used to be good) which is at the end of the day mainstream music, it's not alternative so if you're posting here with the superiority based on what I just said, you owe the orignal poster and apology as you're doing the EXACT same thing, just because it has a guitar doesn't make it any more credible.

The problem I have with popular or mainstream music is the musical side of it. I play a few instruments and I love the technical side of music. So people just singing music they might not even have a connection to due to someone else writing the music turns me off. Also, while I believe Green Day's album Dookie was amazing, I get tired of Green Day turning their back on their roots. But they've chosen their course.

I do like a few (very few) popular songs though. Some are catchy.

You and I probably wouldn't get along well if we had to take a car ride, but hey, it's your choice in music.

But we aren't going to take any car rides together, right?

RIGHT?

Actually I do kind of like Lady Gaga.

Papa, paparazzi.
