I'm in between jobs right now (I start my new one Tuesday), so I've been doing what any out of work man would do: troll netflix for random TV shows.

After exhausting Hoarders (A very interesting show about people with the hoarding mental disease, a show I would suggest to anyone with the time), I decided to watch some Deadliest Warrior. I didn't expect historical accuracy, but I also didn't expect out right lies and unbalanced review.

For those of you who haven't watched the show, they basically compute what historical class of of warrior would defeat another. Seems simple enough. Until you find out their calculations are based mostly on 3 arbitrary range classes (Which they manipulate to their whim, in some cases grouping polearm weapons together with projectile weaponry), 'lethality' ratings (Opposing weapons are frequently tested against different targets), and odd to false weapon choices (Like the use of semi-automatic shotguns against pump action models, despite the fact that both sides have access to both type of models; or comparing shotguns to pistols; or the use of SHOVELS as weapons). All of these things are entered into a program, run a thousand times (The simulations are turn based, if your wondering) and a winner emerges.

And to top it all off, the doctor they use to verify 'kills' seems to be a bit extreme at time. I certainly wouldn't want him treating me... he'd probably look at a paper cut and start filling out your death certificate.

Over all, what I thought would be an entertaining romp through cool stuff has actually angered me.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else has ever watched a TV show and just wondered who in the hell they hired to fact check this stuff?

Side Note: Also, who's looking forward to Lee and Grant (History Channel Special, airing on Wednesday).

I've seen bits, it's very stupid in many many ways. Although the segment on You Have Been Watching about it was very amusing.

It seems to be more just an excuse for messing about than a serious study into these things. It does have some interesting moments though.

Didn't the Spoonybard do something about the show? In anycase, it's entertaining. Horribly, horribly inaccurate but the dramatic recreations are fun to watch.

As long as the hilarious inaccuracy is clearly spelled out as a joke, then it's fine by me. Be as incorrect as you wish if it's for comical effect.

It's not. They are deadly serious about it (pardon the pun). They have their own software for 'simulating' the battle and most of the show is about very angry American men punching and stabbing pig carcasses with ancient weapons and yelling when said carcass gets torn to shreds. It's funny to watch, but the show is marketed as a sort of documentary.

Deadliest Warrior is a guilty pleasure of mine. I know the results are completely retarded, but I just like watching gelatine dummies explode.

I wouldn't be surprised if they ever pitted a ninja (whom would of course be dressed in black and be armed with "death stars") against an MG42 machine gun team. (Whom would of course be shouting "Actung Actung sieg heil!") The ninja would win because Nazi's are bad and ninja's are cool.

maybe its the complete lack of sleep on my part but it sounds like Netflix trolled you :/...how do you troll netflix anyway?

As for you OT...Ancient Aliens or any similar shows anger me to no end on how they pull "facts" from non provable "evidence"

I love Deadliest Warrior. Historical accuracy be damned, it's always entertaining to see what weapons do to gelatine torses/cow skulls/pigs.

Did you see that Celtic stick weapon? It completely brutalised skulls.

The show's regulars (I'm tired and can't think of the correct for of "actor") themselves have stated that a lot of the weapon mismatches and similar errors were due to the show producers assigning what weapons each warrior would use rather than the guests/presenters. The producers pic mainly what they think would look cool or attract an audience rather than what would be a fair match.

Also a lot more tests go on then you see. Watching some episodes they refer to tests that we haven't seen them do because the editing staff have decided that they were too "boring" or the test that we see was more entertaining.

Basically blame the production staff for editing the show to gain more views.

Indeed. I watched an episode where they put William Wallace against Shaka Zulu. The Zulu team were apparently "african martial arts specialists" which right there makes me suspicious of their qualifications. They also kept bouncing around chanting "ZULU ZULU ZULU ZULU ZULU ZULU ZULU ZULU ZULU ZULU ZULU" at every opportunity. The Scotts were visibly bemused by their opponents' shenannigans.

They pitted the ninja against the spartan and proceeded to give the victory to the spartan 'because Spartans are used to pain' and thus when he had his eyes filled with glass shards and blinked his eyes out he just went 'raar' and continued to fight and find a hidden ninja in a forest while blind.

I saw two back to back episodes that were obviously wrong and never watched again. What pissed me off is partially what you point out, but I didn't know exactly how bad this was, but mostly I was mad because they discount training differences. Their ninja vs. spartan episode was the one that pissed me off.

Ninja's were historically peasants who learned their art to defend themselves from dangerous samurai and some of them also became assassins for hire. Spartans were trained from an extremely young age and were professional warriors. Skills notwithstanding, that huge amount of training and combat experience is going to be a huge advantage, maybe an insurmountable barrier.

The clip they show of them fighting isn't the simulation - they just put together a fight scene based on the side that won, while showing each weapon they considered to be the better of each of the categories doing the damage that they expected it to do.

I assumed he meant "trawling" netflix. Not "trolling".

actually they paired a ninja with a spartan in a daytime head to head fight
