I'm not sure why being a white kid would somehow translate into not being able to enjoy hip hop, or any kind of music. As far as I know, there is no genetic component to it.

For some white kids an agry black man yelling at them about gangsta stuff would be somewhat off putting, but then "packinged and sold to white America" is certainly a thing, and I'm sure fir some the gangsta angle had its apeal

I guess. As a white kid growing up amongst white kids, that was the opposite of my experience. You couldn't find a bigger fanbase of DMX enthusiasts, for example. Because it comes so aggressively from another place, that's the whole appeal. Like finding out the world is much bigger than you thought.

EDIT:I should probably mention that my hip-hop tastes are pretty much on the grounds of either smooth, underground, or old school. I just find underground to have some really engaging lyrical compositions and they usually feel so sincere and honest about their topics no matter what they are. Also not sure if this is technically hip-hop or rap but:

I'd also recommend Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap, not the deepest music in the world but it's just so fun and catchy.

More or less. While the lyrics are far down on my priority list when it comes to what music I do or don't like, I am a fan of gangsta rap lyrics. I like the hatred and contempt they have for police and rival gangs, I think it flows well with the vocals and the often dark or bassy beats. I like the arrogance and near-anarchy they display. Some gangsta rap, particularly in Sacramento, also added a death metal mentality to the lyrics, introducing gore and satanism into the mix, which worked really fucking well.

I'm sure there are white kids out there who dream of being Bloods or Crips, and I'd call them idiots, but for me, it's all about the hatred, anger, violence and arrogance. It just works damn well.

yeah when I was a kid I took it seriously and thourght all those rappers were actual murderers also I can't say I'm 100% cool with the glorification of crime and definetly not the mysogany

that said however much like Eminem it has a very cathartic apeal aside of the ususal teenage "edginess"

Then there's Aussie hip hop. May I direct your attention to Seth Sentry, Horrorshow, The Herd (and any of the Herd's member's solo work, particularly that of Urthboy) and my new favourite thing at the moment: Daily Meds.

Hilltop Hoods and Bliss N Eso are our current mainstream mainstays, so check them out, but they're a bit... clean. Probably not the best adjective, but there you go. My point is, do anything but stop at the festival headliners.

as much as I hate to admit it when I listen to american hip hop I think "fight tha power! yeah!" when I hear aussie hip hop I think "ugghhh...bogans..."

that said I can't deny bliss'n'esso are quite good

Not sure what gangsta rap you've listened to, but all the stuff I like is deadly serious. Hell, one of my favourite rap groups has around 80% of its members dead since 1994 due to rival gangs, shootouts with police or are rotting with life sentences. Of course, if you're talking about Dr. Dre or Snoop Dogg, gangsta lite, then.. well yeah, but the harder, more real stuff is as serious as it gets.

Personally, I like the glorification of crime and murder, and think such themes make awesome lyrical and visual material material.
