As lad growing up I had a stalwart fascination with the military and wanted to grow up to be an engineer and make weapons and equipment for it. Then I took my first physics class and decided to be a lawyer instead.

Now that I look back on it, my ideas were not very sound. They were the kind of thing you might see some kid drawing board in class on his notebook.

Tanks.

Or, not so much tanks as battleships with treads on them.

Monstrous things, stretching for nearly a kilometer with guns brimming at every conceivable angle. Guns you might expect to find on the Yamamoto or a fixed gun you might find in a bunker for the Queen when everything gone to shite. Without the inclusion of an obvious BFG one would have a hard time figuring what the main armaments of the tank was, being that all of the guns were so massive.

Of course, a weapon like this would be a disaster in practice. How would load or even keep enough ammunition for the massive naval guns, how would you ever realistically transport such a slow and large target to the front in time for the next big push, what would you do if it gets stuck in a ditch, the list of infeasablities goes on.

However, one person, one with means, shared this vision of my twelve year old self and took it upon him to make that dream come true.

This person was Adolf Hitler, and here are some examples of what he came up with, probably whilst eating crayons with Goering.

Okay,, not so bad or at least I only see one huge-ass gun, maybe he wasn't as crazy as I thought, even shows a sense of humor wi- oh my god what the FU-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landkreuzer_P._1000_Ratte

Take one look at the chart. If that doesn't scream Awesome but Impracticable I don't know what does! It boast not one but TWO guns which were meant for the freaking NAVY just like I imagined during my euphoric youth! it has two of the guns from the afformentioned tank as SECONDARY weapons! Your going to tell me next that it can just drive over rivers.

"it was anticipated that its height, and its ground clearance of 2 metres (6.6 ft) would have allowed it to ford most rivers with ease."

UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

And then we have yet another tank proposed by the stache man which is basically just the biggest artillery piece in the word (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwerer_Gustav) on treads. Oh, and crewed by one hundred men.

I kind of wish that these tanks were put into active service just to see how weaponry developed in response. We would probably be seeing a lot more of these monstrosities stomping around, and with modern weapons too!

Well you turned out to be a lawyer so that's very likely. (I joke, I joke!)

:p

That second tank could be called 'The Compensator' xD

A slightly silly discussion about proposed WWII tanks with a hook title.

And it seems to have gotten you, line and sinker both.

Stuff about not being Hitler really
Weak. I clicked in hoping this would be a thread about either a really interesting Exorcist remake or a long-forgotten tale of childhood bumming by Nazis.

Now this boner is going to go to waste :-(

Ze Germans had that gun-on-a-train thing. Dunno what's it called.
Anyway, I used to draw battles as a kid. I remember conjuring up a roll of paper and draw a 2 meter long, well battle really. With shed loads of tanks, planes, dismembered soldiers and an A-bomb.

The title of this thread indicated something entirely different from what the content actually is.

I'm sort of both disappointed and relieved at the same time.

I like to think we have a little piece of Hitler inside of all of us. Right next to Pol Pot and Stalin's mustache.

When dealing with tanks, I think it's better to have more armor than more guns. A tank is only useful as long as it can still move and the guys inside of it are still kicking. For that reason (and also, yes, for it's kickass gun), I prefer the trusty old M1 Abrams.

Good enough for the past 30 years, and good enough for the foreseeable future. Now that's a tank! Suck it, T-90!

This whole Idea reminds me of Gundams. Awesome as all hell but... so impractical as to be pointless.

The problem with these huge tanks is that the are big big fat targets for bombers. Aircraft did sink 80000 ton battleships moving at 30 knots with 1000s of miles of sea to hide in. Now there is no way that any of the German designs would have survived in the real world for very long.

As someone who imagined impractical weapons as a child as well... I feel like a part of my childhood had Hitler in me too.

I have since lost the drawing but I had designed an aircraft carrying submarine tank.

If you saw Captain America, the crazy war vehicles they had Hydra creating were all mad designs actually proposed by the Third Reich.
The problem was that it was Germany verses the world, and although they did brilliantly early on with their (generally superior) equipment, they just couldn't keep up with the production giants of America and Russia, (apparently before the war began, a German spy went into one Russian factory, and discovered that the annual production numbers of tanks for that one facility was larger than the entire annual tank production numbers in the whole of Germany. When he reported it Hitler threw a fit and nearly had him executed for treason, then he forgot about it because Hitler was bonkers.)
This production deficit combined with the British Air Force raising hell on the German naval, and rail supply lines of oil and stuff meant that near the end of the war Germany couldn't resupply their vehicles or restock their numbers.

On the Eastern front the German tanks were outnumbered 20-1. They managed to put up a good fight, destroying 4 Russian tanks for every 1 German tank, but it was not nearly enough, and the Russians could replace them easily, whereas at that point German industry was disintegrating rapidly from the siege.

I like tanks.

Berta.
The gun on a Train would have been used on another large tank, the P-1500 "Monster".
I see the P-1000 as the inspiration for the "Mammoth" tank in "Command&Conquer" Games.

well there is always the p.1500 monster aptly named

if world of tanks is anything to go by the maus would of been an artillery magnet.

they made a lot of huge ass vehicles as well that saw combat. the jadgtiger tank destroyer for instance. basically invulnerable from the front and packed a 128mm gun. the best example of proper use of that was during the battle of the bulge where 2 of them engaged 18 m4 shermans. 15 were totally destroyed and 3 were immobilised at over 2 miles and the americans didnt find out till after the war what the hell was shooting at them
Lol, in world of tanks the rule for arty apparantly is: shoot the weakest or lowest health thing :p strategic targets like TD's, other arty's or maus/ e100 are never important :p

btw. OP you might like this to see different size maus vs ratte ;)

Reads through the post...

Me: wow... a kilometer long tank in your notebook... wait how big was your notebook? o.o

anyway, this is interesting, especially with the fact that you had no idea, I guess the testament of go big or become a lawyer still stands... haha, this is interesting still.
