Australian researchers are one step closer to finding a vaccine for HIV, and hope to be able to offer a preventative jab within the decade.

Experts at The University of Melbourne have found that people with HIV produce antibodies called ADCC, which trigger the immune system to find and attack the virus.

Analysis of blood samples also found that the antibodies force the HIV virus to change, making it weaker, said Professor Stephen Kent, lead author of a report on the new findings.

"[But] because the antibodies don't develop until after they catch HIV, the antibodies can't actually cure the HIV once it's already there," he said.

Well colour me skeptical but I always thought the problem with HIV was the astronomical rate at which it mutates.

Then again if they've found a universal antigen marker for it then it can only be a step in the right direction.

They actually have pretty incredibly effective retrovirals that makes living with HIV a far cry from what it was in the 80s and 90s.

It'll be interesting to see if they actually produce a vaccine since these retrovirals cost a pretty penny to stay on, and so the pharmaceutical companies would be, um, unlikely to produce a silver bullet for what is turning into a chronic disease (the most profitable ones to treat).

I know that sounds hardhearted, but Diabetes is a case study in how pharmaceutical companies could give a hoot about sick people when there's money to be made (if you're interested feel free to ask).

OT: Iiiiiiiiiiiinteresting, though there's probably some issue with replicating this ADCC and cell recognition. Probably need some method of promoting/accelerating its production, that would be a good research route, I think.

It's not just 'weakened', it's effectively dead. You're more likely to get ill - let alone die - from antibiotics than you are from a vaccine.
