A Challenge to all the British Escapists out there, when you are next in HMV, offer any of the people you are with any object that is nearby (e.g. a CD, DVD, Game, Piece of paper, bottle etc) without saying a word and see if they take it from you. If they do then they are suffering from the bizzare HMV effect.

Intriguing, I have seen this work when out with friends and loved ones though never on random passers by. Although I've noticed this works much better in Computer Exchange (CEX) as their even cheaper then Hmv in many ways. Whats that an entire season of "blurgh 2: revenge of the urgh" for only £5? I'll just get my piggy bank...!

You offer someone an object they grasp it. It doesn't have anything to do with HMV.

It's just you exploiting non-verbal cues. You don't need to say "here, hold this" most people will hold what's offered to them.

Of course it will work even better in a store, if you're looking for movies, games, and whatever. They'll just assume you're suggesting they buy it.

This lol I dubbed it the HMV effect because it is the location i first experienced it, but after trying it in various places, HMV and CEX have the strongest effect, with Gamestation coming a close 3rd

HMV Group is an international entertainment retail chain and is the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom and Canada. The company also operates stores in Ireland, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Why is this specific to HMV, OP? Could you, theoretically, do this anywhere or is it a different breed of people who shop there?

Edit: And you answer my questions while I'm looking up what HMV is and posting here. Move along then.

Again, it's not really an effect, so much as a non-verbal exchange in the context of a media store. This isn't all that crazy.

I like to call it an effect because it sounds cool

Haha I might try this. Although in fairness I accept anything that's offered to me (I'm the kind of person to go along with something even if I have no idea what's going on).

I imagine most people will just assume you have a good reason for offering.

HMV seems to have that captivating effect to it, probably the dreary lighting and overload of things to look at/buy. You can also use this effect in reverse and take things from people.

Or switch the item they're holding with something completely different.
