You offer someone an object they grasp it. It doesn't have anything to do with HMV.

It's just you exploiting non-verbal cues. You don't need to say "here, hold this" most people will hold what's offered to them.

Of course it will work even better in a store, if you're looking for movies, games, and whatever. They'll just assume you're suggesting they buy it.
This lol I dubbed it the HMV effect because it is the location i first experienced it, but after trying it in various places, HMV and CEX have the strongest effect, with Gamestation coming a close 3rd
HMV seems to have that captivating effect to it, probably the dreary lighting and overload of things to look at/buy. You can also use this effect in reverse and take things from people.

Or switch the item they're holding with something completely different.
I am Deffinately trying to switch people's stuff, that'll totally spin them out

Bah, misleading thread title.

I was hoping the "HMV Effect" was some kind of experiment, involve putting a small dog in front of a gramophone and playing different records to see what genre of music makes it shit.

What would you call the Transatlantic equivalent? J.C.Penny effect? Five And Dime Effect sounds better though. (And has a cool acronym)

If it was the Wal Mart effect, they'd drop it, break it, kick the pieces about and then leave.

I really, really, don't understand this. Why would you take something a stranger is handing you? Just, why? If it's not something you're looking for, why take it? Why not ask their reasons for handing it over? Why even actually take it from their hand?

What I do understand is that people can hand stuff to other people anywhere, not just in stores. Perhaps it's more likely to happen in stores, that doesn't make it an 'effect'.

I am moderately irritated by how ridiculous this whole concept is.

If you really want to have a laugh in HMV, get a CD, game or DVD and pull off the security tag on the back or side or whatever. Look for someone with a bag that is open and slip it in. Hilarity ensues as you watch your victim be searched on the door.

[small]I didn't try it before so use at your own risk :p[/small]

offer any of the people "YOU ARE WITH!!!!!!" any object that is nearby (e.g. a CD, DVD, Game, Piece of paper, bottle etc) without saying a word and see if they take it from you.

Yes I misread the first post, and that's my mistake, but that makes it even more redundant. They'll ask, then you either explain why you're doing it, or look like a tool trying to make a bad joke if you don't.

I do almost all my shopping of that kind online, but I'm sure there must be some barely hanging on, like F.Y.E. or Gamesomething-or-other, but they come and go faster than furniture stores.

What's more to explain?
Well it's never happened to me, so I'm a bit confused. This happens inside the store? And when you had it to them they just... buy it?

Again, it's not really an effect, so much as a non-verbal exchange in the context of a media store. This isn't all that crazy.
Yeah but you have Simon Cowell as your avatar so...

Meh....whenever people do this to me I either imediatly put it back on the shelf, or just look at them with a "what..?" look.

Shelf is there for holding things, use it.

You were being nit-picky so I was just playing on that.

There might be a reason I chose this username avatar combination. I deprive anyone who draws attention to that the chance to be original.

I would assume it doesn't matter, as long as they take it and say nothing. Even if they put it back, they still took it

EDIT: Woooo 2222nd post
