Necrons, they can come back to life, they also have Monoliths which have the cheapest fucking rules in the game. They are a good choice.
Necrons aren't so much of a good choice with 5th ed rules. The codex is in dire need of an update and i think it is being re-done next year after space wolves.
I personally would go with either Imperial Guard of Tau. (Tau need a new codex too though XD)
Imperial Guard go with large numbers of infantry or tanks or a mixture of the two. Lots of models to paint and game with and sometimes you need to use really innovative tactics to win with them.
They have also just released a new supplement called planetstrike that focuses on attack/defend strategies. It adds a whole new tactical level to the game.
If you want to go for an army with some nicely detailed models that are fun to paint but you don't want to get lots then go for the generic space marines. The best chapter in my opinion is the Black Templars. They have the best background and are a very strong close combat army. They lack some of the cool stuff that other space marines get in the new space marine codex though.
If you want to go for a space marine codex army then i would suggest theming it as either white scars or salamanders. Both have a certain special uniqueness. White Scars are an army that uses a lpot of fast attack units such as bikes (mostly bikes) and the Salamanders like flame and melta weapons. (Melta weapons are good against tanks).
Salamanders are by far the easier to paint though. I'm sure most people would agree that white is the worst colour to paint.
So yeah, as you can no doubt tell, i am something of a 40k fanatic. Trust me when i say there is no better hobby on this planet. And if you have a good store near you you will find some of the best people on earth as well. they are all insane though. Of course, some are populated by knobs
