Tony Scott was always the rebel. He made a vampire film without a focus on gore, he made a submarine film about race as well as cultural divides and transformed a pulpy Tarantino script into a heartbreaking classic. Yet he never forgot the power of film at its core. How it can thrill and excite with every frame. Tony Scott understood that movies are entertainment. That we go to the cinema above all else to be wowed. He is a legend that could easily have sat in his equally talented brother's shadow but instead blazed a path of his own into the danger zone. An inspiration to all budding film-makers and a memory to be honoured.

Hollywood director Tony Scott 'jumps to death from bridge'

Hollywood director Tony Scott, famous for films including Top Gun, has died after jumping from a bridge in Los Angeles, the authorities have said.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's office said Scott's death was being investigated as a suicide.

British-born Scott, brother of Alien director Ridley, shot to fame in the 1980s with a string of action films.

The 68-year-old's blockbuster hits included Crimson Tide, Days of Thunder and Beverly Hills Cop II.

The coroner said Scott jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge, which spans San Pedro and Terminal Island in Los Angeles.

Lt Joe Bale, from the coroner's office, said the director was seen parking his car and jumping into the water at about 12:30 (19:30 GMT) on Sunday.

His body was recovered from the harbour less than three hours later.

"We will go where the facts take us. We have no reason to believe it was not a suicide," Lt Bale told the BBC.

Scott was famous for his fast-paced blockbusters, and carved out a distinctive style to his films using fast editing and digital effects.

He made a number of films with actor Denzel Washington, including Man on Fire and most recently Unstoppable.

At the time of his death, he was rumoured to be working with Tom Cruise on a sequel to Top Gun.

RIP Tony Scott

I enjoyed quite a few of his films like top gun and unstoppable.

It is always sad to hear that someone took their own life.

Well, that happened. What exactly do you say to something like that that hasn't already been said? I feel sorry for the family and I'm left wondering "why?"

NOOOO! This sucks! I don't mean to imply that his death isn't tragic by itself, but we were actually maybe getting a Top Gun 2, by the original director?

Man...this sucks all around. Sucks for us action fans, sucks for his family...it's just bad all around.

I've not actually seen much of the guy's work. I also don't know what motivates nine-tenths of Hollywood to do ANYTHING (except that I'm sure Heath Ledger was killed by the Joker). Can...we blame Tom Cruise for this?

Killed by the Joker, or by going crazy playing him?

I subscribe to the "The world is out to get Terry Gilliam" theory. The poor man has yet to make a film that hasn't either been horribly mangled by studio execs (Brazil), bombed at the Box office (Baron Manchausen), or had his leading man die during production (Heath Ledger during Doctor Parnassus)

Is there a difference?
Well yeah. It isn't like he died during filming. He'd been done with Dark Knight for months. He was working on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus when he died. And he wasn't exactly a lunatic in that film, just a scumbag.

While of course it is sad that he died, I prefer to see the silver lining. It means that we don't have to sit through another Cruise-fest, the main character(Goose, don't you even attempt to argue with me about this point) died in the first one, the story was over. I may not rejoice at his death, but I will rejoice the things his death will bring, at the very least postpone this abomination for a few more months, outright kills at best.

Damn... that is a real shame. He was an older experienced filmmaker that had a lot of good film credits under his belt, I wonder what went wrong that made him take his own life. It's wierd, I'm looking over his IMDB page and it's full of films that I'm familiar with, have seen, or want to see, and now he's just gone. It gives me this sort of hollow feeling.

Damn, I wonder if this will cut the show Coma short, or if Ridley will pick up any extra slack in that.

Holy shit, that came outta nowhere!

I always liked his movies, they had a hard gritty edge to them.

Anyway, condolences to Ridley Scott, I guess.

Very sad news. Hearing about an older person committing suicide is always sad, especially for somebody in Tony's position.

His films helped redefine the action genre after a period of excess. Injecting fine storytelling, an eye for excitement and blistering pace is what he will be remembered for. And he shall be missed. Condolences to his family and friends.

Why is 'jumps to death from bridge' in mini-quotes? Usually this implies a pun of some sort, when this is actually what happened.

edit: Forum poster Dudeman 'writes post about his confusion'

What a shame. Enemy of the State was a great film. RIP.

One can only speculate on the trigger for his suicide. Was he suffering long-term depression? Manic depression? It must have been quite a melancholic death.

While I may have had nitpicks about his particular style, it's always hard to see something like this happen. The film industry lost a dreamer, and a family lost a loved one.

RIP, Tony.
