So, according to you, the person making statements about health science, you have (1) never heard of the New England Journal of Medicine, and (2) think it's a website.

1.) Yes. I'm not American. If I read English articles, it's mostly Nature.
2.) No, that was in reference to your first two articles.

You know what would also raise GDP? Vandalism and graffiti! But it ain't going to lift no god danged economies out of collapse.

The economy was booming, now it is in a trough, circle of life.

In the end, smoking is more costly to the country than not smoking.
Treatments, sick-leave and palliative medicine are expensive.
well in australia that isnt true, the money the goverment gets in tax from smokers is more than 10 times the amount the government pays in medical treaments to fix smoking related ailments.

In fact if the govermnet banned smoking it would screw up our economy... that is the main reason they havent really done anything about it... well no real effort.

I hate smoking, it is a horrible thing to be around smokers... but the fact is, they really arnt going anywhere...

Meh, you can't expect me to know them all.
It probably just never came up during the lectures, which is why I'm stuck with general journals such as Nature and Lancet and the more specific journals that fit my field.

Whatever you say.
I'll be sure to check whether any articles I read in the future stem from said journal.

Me not knowing the New England Journal Of Medicine still doesn't make recent pubmed publications wrong, though.
Note that your NEJOM article is more than 10 years old.

I'll look into it.

Come hell or high water smokers will still smoke, drinkers will still drink, and morons will still post their dumb ass epiphonies on how to solve the world's problems on these and similar forums.

I GOT IT!

ever notice that the economy went crashing down as we starting throwing down hardcore smoking laws?
so many people are quitting smoking...alot of government tax money came from the tobacoo trade.
anyone else seeing the pattern?
yeah. smokers, they are the key.

see becuase you can really only smoke at home...or when your in a car full of adults or no one.
you have to walk out of the pub/bar/club/restaurant every time you want a cigg...makes it more of a hastle to smoke.

comment on my idea.

No, you've got it all wrong. I present to you my explanation of why the economy went to hell.

People were buying houses they couldn't afford.
They were buying those houses with money they didn't have.
They borrowed the money they didn't have from banks.
The banks that lent the money weren't paying attention to what happened to the money.
And apparently this was a bad thing! Who knew?

So basically, the way to fix the economy is don't spend money you don't have. You wouldn't think people would need to be told this, and yet here we are.
Replace people with "Citizens of the USA" and we are 90% on track.

Interesting idea... maybe we should legalize marijuana and tax it as well! It would even increase junk food sales!

No of course not, then everyone would be too damn lazy to work.

Three problems; the reason the economy failed (primarily) was because bankers made stupid investments with no real thought to consequences just so they could hit some targets, and local councils and governments etc. had there money invested this way so they lost loads of money

I've never seen a smoker give up just because it's a hassle, an addiction I think may override that/

And finally, have you seen the prices of nicotine patches. Its about the same as a pack of cigarettes so the overall money change is minimal
Wait a minute. You say the councils "lost loads of money". To lose money, someone must gain money, so who has this money now?

Well see this is the bit I don't fully understand because apparently the money never actually existed but they can still loose it. I'm not educated enough in the economic situation I'm afraid (maybe someone here can explain it) i suppose that some people have made some money during this but it'll be in private funds and stored in a EDIT; safe deposit box or used to buy things like Gold which don't loose value

The fact that the credit crisis and the smoking ban occured at the same time is entirely coincidental. Whilst the government do make a profit out of cigarettes they also make money out of cars, banks (The REAL cause for the crisis) and any other non-necessary items which get VAT.

To be honest, saying that getting rid of the cigarette ban will stop the money crisis is the same as saying that the government should call Ocean Finance and convert all of their loans into one single, manageable loan that they can pay back over the next couple of years.

The irony of that though being that banks and loan companies were the source of this crisis in the first place, handing out money they didn't have an infinite amount of to people wouldn't pay it back. Then they realised that they didn't have an infinite amount of money and started to go bust as a result.
