North East England Stemm Cell Institute claims that it did create just that.

Sauce: http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Health/Scientists-Claim-To-Have-Created-Artificial-Sperm-At-North-East-England-Stem-Cell-Institute/Article/200907115331725?f=rss

Quoting the article:
Azim Surani, Professor of Physiology and Reproduction at the University of Cambridge, said the artificial cells are a "long way" from being authentic sperm cells.
But I gues a step is a step.

Now, the whole matter is geared towards helping infertile men father children which I think is awesome but, come on, you know there are some kooky people out there... ...which is also awesome.

What do you guys think?

EDIT:

Oh snap. I forgot to add this one: http://www.smh.com.au/news/science/artificial-sperm-on-the-horizon/2008/04/07/1207420287249.html

It's about experiments being carried out on mice and done in Germany.

Also, it is quite spooky. It talks about a possibility of using sperm cultivated from a woman on another woman thus making men redundant in a biological standpoint.

Creepy, right?

Great, increase our ability to propagate when we're already spreading too far and too fast as it is.

= What I was going to say.
And I like being relevant to reproduction, thank you very much.

I can imagine it now, a full scale war between men and women.

Creepy...

Somebody needs to tell these scientists that over population is a problem and that helping people breed easier will not help the problem *sigh* I guess it's too late now, huh?

This could help a lot of childless couples. I'm all for it.
Overpopulation is only a problem in the poor regions.
We Westerners need more children to work and pay taxes for the ageing population.
Seriously, we really need more young people because otherwise our whole system'll collapse in the next 50-100 years.

I agree. And I don't think that people should really mess with that stuff...

We're here for a reason, and the whole male-making-sperm-thing has worked out so far, as has the man-being-dad-thing. Well, that last one hasn't worked out as well as the first...

But still, I think we should be putting more time and effort into oh, I dunno, things like cancer research and a cure for AIDS? I know it's not one or the other, but these guys have gotta be pretty smart to do that sort of stuff. Surely they could go into something better than making males useless.

Well, actually, unless they can create some sort of medication that makes women good at parallel parking, I think we're cool.

(I'm joking, ladies. Please don't hurt me.)

you know.. and not to get grose, but there are certain...em.. toys we females can get that look, and have the same function ability as a male..( and by that I mean man goo) in which they sell lub like things that " replicate" said male genetic material...

one could replace said synthetic, with this stuff and....

well that would make males obsolete to some women too

no but seriously though, it's sorta....scary and fascinating in all the same ways

I just saw this on the news. Anyway I don't think it makes men useless cos you need to have an embryo to create the sperm, so don't worry men, we're still useful!

You know, if scientists are able to accomplish this type of research, I think they see reasons as to why it could benefit us. So stop saying this research is pointless. Who knows what kind of benefits it could have.

Do we have to drag religion into everything?

^This. With dwindling resources, especially with regards to fish, you think people would be more worried about that.
