And as having my first time of actually seeing Anon accounts, I am freaked out by the information they were able to get on Chris Dodd, its rather scary.

Exactly this. I don't get the big deal people are making over it. Taking a step back and looking at it the websites will be back up eventually and they're not even important to running the organizations they represent. It'd be a bigger deal for Amazon if they went down. These sites though? Big deal, busywork for the server admins.

Indeed. It's the equivalent of a temper tantrum with just as much impact. We, as an internet collective did more for the internet in the past few days with the blackouts and such, than Anon will ever achieve.

Don't much care about Megaupload as a site, what worries me is that the government could take it down BEFORE the law even passed...Megaupload actually does have legit stuff on it, and I really think that anonymous are just trying to paint them as like 'the beginning' or something.

Well the only impact I can imagine is negative impact. No one in support of taking down Megaupload or the like is going to be intimidated into backing down. Really all it says is "Hey look, there's people who are getting away with vandalism", which would more naturally lead to the response "We should do something about them" instead of "Oh no, we better give in to their demands". Things like this is why I don't want Anon supporting the fight against things like SOPA.

I think the biggest annoyance is that people seem to be treating Anon as 'protectors of freedom'.

I was hoping that Anonymous would pull some crazy shit, but I was kind of expecting that something would be more useful than, "We've pulled informational sites for these following businesses down." If anything that'll just give the politicians more ammunition for SOPA.

Cute. A website that actually does have a legitimate reason for being shut down due to piracy, one that was shut down for reasons within our current legal framework (without needing SOPA to do it.)

And Anonymous flips their shit. Seriously? They're actually building a case for future SOPA's with this action. They've shown we don't want to compromise, we want to PIRATE ALL THE THINGS~! Well if you don't meet the various developers/industries half way and give them a right to protect their investment, they're gonna push a thousand more SOPA's by the end of the day and take our rights instead.

ummm i think they are just pissed because the guy was arrested in New Zeland, which is by far the dumbest thing the US has done for awhile. I love how out of all of the things available to rage about, anonymous chooses trying to get revenge over a site that has always had the association of being a haven for streaming copyrighted material. To me, this makes anonymous a painfully hilarious band of dedicated idiots.

Not only that but they are gasp PROFITING off the consumers who want the ability to share copyrighted material. What Megaupload is doing is completely criminal.

It's not about what the site does, it's about fighting censorship. One site goes down, it sets a precedent that could put any site down...

With Megaupload gone, it helps fight SOPA since less of a threat (profiting off storlen- copyrighted
material) means less of a push from the industries that originally supported the bill.

Uhh... No. SOPA is about getting the power to persecute over-seas sites, such as Pirate Bay, hence why they were able to shut down Megaupload without SOPA or PIPA passing. Also, with a small bit of research you'll find that the a lot of the big companies pushing SOPA were actually the one's who not only released and spread piracy software, they also taught people how to use it through sites under their umbrella such as CNET.com and Download.com.

Basically: Those companies want control of the net, so that people will be forced to watch and pay for their shit rather than enjoying whatever they want for free, and SOPA is a way to secure that internationally because as we saw with Megaupload they can already do it domestically.

THAT is why Anonymous responded the way they did, and that is why I cheer them on, and why I encourage anyone who believes in freedom of expression and in the idea that money should be kept out of art to do the same.

It's not necessarily WHO is supporting the "good fight" (depending on your interpretation of such), but HOW.
(It's amazing the difference those same three letters can make when they're rearranged a bit.)

I wouldn't mind having Anon's support if they actually put some rationality into their response, rather than resorting to their usual barely-contained nihilistic tantrums.

Here's my take:

I'm not now nor will I ever be a fan of Anon, BUT I will admit they're in the right here, and all the folks hemming and hawing about it need to STFU.

Look, it DOESN'T MATTER if Megaupload was god damn pirate HQ, ok? The fact is that this is NOT about piracy, it never has been. SOPA and PIPA couldn't be more transparent if they were literally made of glass.

The RIAA, MPAA, ESA and their ilk don't give a damn about piracy because they know (like any sane person) it has virtually no impact: overblown numbers aside, piracy is for poor people who don't have or can't waste the money to buy a game or see a movie, and most music comes from YouTube and iTunes now so the music industry cares even less. All of these people give less than negative 800 shits about piracy. And even if they did, Megaupload is, at best, a street hustler, not a major cartel, to use drug dealer analogies.

No, this is about POWER. Its about establishing a single, resounding voice saying that these groups, these gangs IMO, control these industries and no one else. This is a powergrab pure and simple, and Megaupload was just the first victim. There is a reason that Google, who have NO reason to give a shit about us, came out against SOPA. I'll give you a hint, it has nothing to do with free speech. It's about power, or more precisely, about the RIAA, MPAA, ESA et al trying to take it all and leave nothing for the rest of us. Piracy is the excuse used to explain this cyber-lynching, and like most lynchings the supposed reason behind it is at best tenuous and at worst farcical.

I'm not going to defend Anon. I'm not here to say everything they do is right. But in this case, in this fight, Anon is on the side of the angels and we'd all do well to at the very least realize exactly what is at stake. It's not for Megaupload, or even Wikipedia or those websites that blackout yesterday...its us. Our power, what little we have, is being threatened and like it or not Anon is trying (and failing, by all accounts, but it's the thought that counts) to stop that. So in this situation, down in the trenches on the frontline of this bullshit war, either grab a machine gun and start firing or shut the hell up and get a deferment. I frankly don't care which anyone takes, they're both valid choices, but let's not start the friendly fire while we're under attack, ok?

We can all go back to despising Anon after this SOPA/PIPA thing is (god willing) killed, right now we need all hands on deck, no matter how grimy they may be. When the war's over we can sort out who gets a medal of honor and who gets a court martial.
