I've never done it, but I'm interested in it. I think I'd be one to use kits and cans until I know what I'm doing. I wouldn't want to botch something and hurt myself.
I don't think I'd start with beer though. I don't drink much alcohol, but when I do it tends to be apple cider or wine so I figure that's where to start. There are some non-grape wine recipes that sound very interesting. Things like dandelions or strawberries. I'd love to try that.

One of said beer-brewing friends once showed me a recipe from back in colonial days in a book he had - it was for some kind of chicken beer. He's never dared to try making it himself.

:D

Ahem.

Please find us the recipe.

Please. :D

OT: Would really love to trying this someday, problem for me at the moment is space. Not enough room for storage and preparation from what I can gather.

We tried to make beer once experimenting and it blew up.
Good thing it was in the shed =D

Anyway, we used to but we moved and don't have the room at the moment

Elderberry wine is lovely but if you don't know what you're doing it can be like floor cleaner D:

My dad used to make wine when he was at uni which was apparently quite successful.
My brother has tried a couple of times to make beer, the last batch of which was awful but he still has at least twenty bottles left of.

I make mead. I'm no mazer by any stretch of the imagination, but my apple and orange varieties are damn pleasant(and intoxicating) if I do say do myself. When the economy crashes, I have a backup plan for keeping myself fed(along with a garden). I plan on buying some of the larger carboys with water airlocks when I have the extra cash, but for now I make do with plastic jugs and lightly punctured balloons.
But you can get really cheap, effective demijohns off Amazon...

OT: I'm pretty good at making cider, but my choice of juice made it visually unappealing. The taste was a little rough too.

I'd like to give it another go with some raspberries. Fucking love me some raspberry cider...

Hmmm I made wine once, tasted like crap. Never tried beer but seeing as I think all beer tastes like shit, if I made my own i'm sure i'd mess it up even more.

We do beer a few times a year, Great-Grandpa got us all into the habit of making our own wine and we all do that every month.

I don't have the space or time to operate an illegal still so no shine for me. I'll stick to my Kentucky bourbon.

Cinnamon Apple Ale sounds like something I would want, and even though I don't care much for stout that vanilla cacao one you're working on sounds good.
What was that cilantro ale like?
The cilantro Ale tasted like grass. It was the most bitter thing I have ever drank. That didn't stop me from drinking about 4 gallons of it over time though.
