Homefront could have had so much potential as an open-world FPS

I've been waiting for a developer to create an open-world first-person shooter based around resisting an invading army. Saboteur is the closest game to this, but it was third-person, tried too hard to be GTA: WWII, and ultimately the game was plagued by a lot of technical problems.

I know this is not what the developers were aiming for when they created this title, but Homefront could have been so much greater. Imagine that after you were rescued from the prison bus, you were left to resist the invasion as you saw fit. Convert any building you want into your resistance HQ, recruit NPCs, scavenge for supplies and raid Korean depots for ammunition, liberate each area of Colorado with the aid of the locals.

Instead, we got Modern Warfare 2: Rise of the Koreans. At times they almost play like the same exact game. I know that scripted gameplay is more "cinematic" than sandbox-style gameplay, but plenty of games have shown you can strike a good balance between the two.

Kaos Studios, I am disappoint.

Indeed. So often shooters often such interesting set-pieces that it is so disappointing when you realize the environment is but a wallpaper with no affect on gameplay.

I really don't think a new IP with a huge open world would be a good starting point for a franchise. Nor do I believe a publisher would green light such an ambitious project for a new IP.

I do, however, believe there's merit in what you describe. I like the idea quite a bit and think it would make a fantastic game in it's own right. Perhaps for a sequel?

If this game does well by THQ I'm sure there will be more Homefront games, depending on how well it does may convince them that something with a larger scope (and thus: budget) would be feasible. There is certainly enough stories to be told by the resistance in this scenario (or even the Koreans perspective). I really think there's a lot to this game's fiction and the whole "Call of Duty clone" thing was really just to get their foot in the door (so to speak).

Captcha= there ledivids (huh?)

I actually though it was open world because of how the developers were describing it, until I saw some gameplay that is.

i think that homefront is a whole step above COD because of the fact that it is a more tactical game employing personal battle equipment and drones, this gives the player a new 'feature' to explore and use. But for open world well i have only player 10 mins of offline mulitplayer practice so i dont know most of the game
