OP: You mentioned the plot being like Red Dawn. Considering that it was written by John Millius, who wrote Red Dawn, it makes sense.

Personally, i'm looking forward to Homefront. I like the plot and i like the fact that you are aren't just another testosterone-pumped Spec-Ops douche-bag.

Tired of seeing threads about this all over the internet.

Its not original, please just get over it. I'm buying it simply to spite you guys.
and it`ll be an epic win for us because you spent 60 bucks on a game we all knew was crap to begin with :d
Depends where you get it from

In my eyes it'll be fine. How good a game depends on who plays it, as opinion is different for everyone.
True, and i honestly do hope you enjoy the game, and Metro 2033 if you prepurchase.

I can't find anything remarkable about the game.

They keep throwing about Half-Life 2 in interviews as a point of influence, but all I've seen so far makes that seem a bit of an insult to Valve.
How so is it an insult to Valve?
Because one's HL2 and the other is a rather unremarkable looking shooter. I could be wrong and it could be the second coming, but right now? Nada.
Oh yeah, because HL2 can't be compared with any other shooters, HL2 is the best ever...

Didn't realise they were doing that. I already have Metro, but still :p

Hey, here's a tip: try reading what something says instead of just trying to make a jab.

The point is, its a universally acclaimed, very highly regarded game, whilst Homefront (outside of it's concept) seems bland - which leads me to believe the devs are just name-dropping.

Certain developers do it all time, and I'm just wondering if they're doing the same.

True about the Red Dawn thing. But, unfortunately even though they are "civilian freedom fighters" they plot will play out the exact same as if they were spec-ops douche-bags, especially considering your character has a military background, which in this case means you are basically indestructible.

I've been reading/watching the developer diaries, trailers and news about the upcoming military FPS shooter "Homefront". One of their main selling points is the originality of the game, which in a market so saturated of bland military shooters, is essential. (Links to these developer diaries will be posted below.)

At one point, they talk about opening on these huge expanses, they show a crashed civilian plane from when the EMP went off and a developer say's, "It's kind of like this moment where you're like, this is really something different, it's really spectacular." Now, I don't know about you but I find crashed planes have been done to death. Modern warfare 2, Left 4 dead, as well as movies like War of the Worlds, just to name a few. Also the concept of an occupied America, was that not the big "shock" moment of Modern Warfare 2? And they even mention they took inspiration from movies like Red Dawn. As well as being an underdog fighting against a greater power, that's been done to death too.

Another thing they talk about is characterization, but they later say that your character is a lone, silent type. Who, I expect is also an expert in all types of weapons and vehicles, (then again, he is a pilot so let's at least let him get away with being able to fly a helicopter) and absorbs bullets like a sponge.

I don't know people, I just feel like it's advertised as so different and original when really it's just another gray scale FPS. What are your thoughts, will you be buying it? Discuss! Here are the links to the developer diaries.

I think the "originality" aspect is that they've pretty much reversed the standard set-up of mainstream FPS. Call Of Duty, you're part of the greatest military machine the world has ever seen. In Halo, you're the member of a vast military machine that may have seen better days, but is still capable of going toe-to-toe with the Covenant. In Duke Nukem, you're a one-man army that can defeat an Alien Armada before his bubble gum loses its flavor.

There's some games here and there which have focused on being a member of a resistance movement (Red Faction), I can't think of one set in the near future in a recognizable setting. While it's not virgin territory, it's not been gang-banged like most of the other FPS set-ups and settings.

Looks like it could be a really effective story and I'll be checking out the reviews when its released to see if the game lives up the promise of the premise.

the reason red dawn was so significant was that Americans really did believe that the soviets were on the brink of invasion, and they legitimately had the nukes and infantry to fight the Americans.

it was a genuinely scary idea. its not any more.
To comment further on this, its painfully obvious that the writer is just trying to recapture that same feeling by making the enemy North Korea. The problem is that North Korea couldn't possibly take over America in the near future, so the plot is just laughably absurd. He was fixated on using a country that is still an enemy of the USA he didn't care if the plot made no sense as a result. And no, that EMP bullshit does not make it any more plausible.

Homefront is one of the most unoriginal games I've seen in a while. What irks me about it is how the developers act like it somehow isn't.

To: Homefront,
Occupied America? Ha, beat you to it, na na na naaa.
Love from, Modern Warfare 2.

Hey Dipshit Homefront,
That grayscale boring shit was last year. You're a little late to the party, dicktits. Our turn, *****.
Yours Sincerely, Bulletstorm, Rage, Brink, and Duke Nukem Forever.

Dear Homefront,
It's either balls-out-crazy, like Bulletstorm, Duke etc, or balls-out-sci-fi, like myself, Killzone 3, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, MGS: Rising, Portal 2, and Deux Ex.
We'll be the big-hitters this year.
Us and Batman: Arkham City. I mean, it's fucking Batman.
Bitches love Batman.
Hoping you're well, Crysis 2.

Sorry, felt compelled to do that.
OT: Meh, I don't like the look of Homefront, style-wise, just... something odd about it. Plus, I think it'll be a near-exact clone of CoD, Battlefield, etc, as much as it tries to prove people otherwise. That quote in the ZP Video springs to mind.
"I am not a fanboy gritty realistic grey-and-brown FPS."
"Yes you are..."

I'm waiting until Brink=Assassin's Creed: Modern Warfare.
Yeah, Brink looks pretty original, also it's BRIGHT! Which is a nice change.

It may not be so original, but maybe, with a sequel it can be. But I will be picking this up, since the game seems to be very story driven.

It's Red Dawn with North Koreans- right down to taking place in Colorado!
Hell, it's even [a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homefront_(video_game)#Overview"]written by the same neo-con daydreamer who wrote 'Red Dawn'![/a]

How is this in any way supposed to be original?

OT: I think we need a game where you play as a resistance fighter who is in a country invaded by the US. THAT would be an interesting story if done right.
THAT would be banned in a second.

Very unimpressed by what I have seen so far, both with the story and the gameplay. Now, if America actually loses, has to submit to Korean rule and eventually fades away into the pages of history, then I might give them a point for a somewhat original ending, at least as far as FPS-games where you play an American is concerned. On the other hand, what are the odds of that happening?

It's got a dedicated PC dev team, nowadays that is pretty original. I like the look of it. Mind you I haven't played any of the recent AAA FPS games except Bad Company 2.

EDIT: Oh and I'm hoping for an ending like Red Dawn,
Everyone dies except two who scarper off to Canada. Then they show the rock with their names scratched into it. The U.S. wins *sigh* but the resistance or this group anyway, are wiped out in an attempt to get those two out of the occupied area. I could live with a noble sacrifice ending.

Man, I'd love to play a game where my side actually loses it'd be different, of course it would have to have a good story besdies that, but ending wise it would be nice.
