Wtf... I am honestly at a lost for words. How did we get to this point?

EDIT: Whenever I think of this, the very first thing to come to my mind is the Red Scare, the point in time when people in the US were being held on trial if they were suspected of being communists,

Dammit, this might make getting parts for pipe bombs more risky.
Not that I need parts for pipe bombs *shifty eyes*

I swear.. it gets worse and worse everyday.

Honestly? Does this mean that our "homeland security" will also be outsourced to China too?

I honestly cant help but to think were on the verge of something majorly cracking here, and if it does, it will NOT be pretty. Im just hoping im wrong.

America's been through this shit before, we'll go through this shit again, seems to happen once a generation or so.

People who think this is some new threat to civilization need to pay closer attention in history class (then again, "those who don't learn from history...")

You're already seeing the latest fever begin to break thanks to the TSA taking things a step too far and the whole Wikileaks thing (even Jay Leno said "Obama's finally giving us 'the most transparent administration in history' that he promised on the campaign trail. Thanks to WikiLeaks.") It's our Joseph Welch "Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?" moment.

Further proof for my theory, that we WILL see an awesome, oppressive cyberpunk dystopia in our time!
I SO need to brush up my hacking and/or Katana-fighting skills.

So this is basically trying to get people to report any crime or suspicious behaviour they see?

How is this bad? I doubt the authorities are going to arrest people without decent evidence.

I didn't see anything in that article that suggested idiocy to the level of the Red Scare or McCarthyism.

"I'll like a dozen bottles of bleach please" (If you get this, good for you. If not go see Four Lions)

Only truly moronic "terrorists" would get caught with schemes like this.

If I were in the states and the FBI were to search my room I would certainly be held for questioning. I have electronics parts capable of making a detonator either remote or timed, I have some lab glassware that could be used to make explosives as well as a few (though small amounts) chemicals also used to make explosives. I also know how to and have made detonators before, for rocketry, a potato cannon, remote photography, and fireworks. I also have the lab knowledge and experience to make basic explosives from scratch. It is really quite simple if you know the chemistry. Plus I have access to large supplies of lab grade reagents and several tonnes of fertilizer. Basically, after posting this I will be watched be CSIS and the FBI.
I am not a terrorist though. Besides, the explosives I could make are much too unstable to use in a non-suicide bomb terrorist situation.

I mean all is takes to make a cell phone detonator is replacing the pager motor with a relay and soldering in an extra battery for longer up time. You could also double up the relays with a simple circuit holding one open as long as the power source is connected and tripping it if the cellphone loses power or is destroyed, obviously this would use a separate power supply. Anyways, redundant detonation systems aside you should never build an cellphone activator, even if it is a text activated light switch you use for turning on the porch lights when you get back, the police see a cellphone wired into the wall and threaten to call the bomb squad...
EDIT: That reminds me of a project I plan on doing that will make a computer text me when a motion sensor is tripped.

This makes an L4D style Zombie Apocalypse even harder.

I wonder how much trouble I would get in If I posted my schematics and recipe, I am guessing a lot. The easiest way to find these explosives is scent, so if the government is serous about finding terrorists they should deploy dogs at these stores.

Yeah. I swear reporting crimes or suspicious behaviour is what you're expected to do anyway. Isn't it?

Ugh. I hate how badly this quote is mis-used. Here's what B. Franklin actually said:

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
The addition of the words 'essential' and 'temporary' make a huge difference. They transform what would be a rather black-and-white, absolutist comment into one that is far more moderate and considerate of the fact that people do need safety and stability in their lives, as well as freedom.

All they're doing is pooling resources to make and show a video in some shops to remind you to do what you should already be doing! You're not obliged to! This isn't 'Fascism', 'Nazi Germany' or '1984'! Get some perspective!

Think you can organize a couple of pimped-out motorbikes ?
