>Clockwork: Start a thread about Homestuck.

Oh yes. I did it.

Now, before I get started, I'm going to make a few things clear. This thread has rules.

This is not a hate thread. If you do not like Homestuck, there is a 'go back' button on your browser. Use it!

Not all of us are caught up to the webcomic, guys. Please make sure you make spoilers. (I'll say anywhere from Act 5 onwards, but you may mark before if you feel like it's a big spoiler.)

Please keep courteous, at the least. You may swear, but please, don't tell someone off for their opinion.

Keep your talk readable. That means no text talk, everyone. And don't use any quirks, that'll get annoying real fast.

This is not a roleplay thread either! If you want to roleplay, ask someone via PM!

Talk about ships and theories is very welcome, but don't flame someone because of what they think or what they like. If you disagree, make a polite response explaining why you disagree. C'mon. A good portion of us are adults here.

And with that, go ahead and start posting!

--

I'll go ahead and say a few things first, too.

I'll keep this a little brief:

My favourite character is Aradia. I feel she is one of the roundest and all around likable characters in the webcomic. I do want to see more of her soon.

My least favourite character is Feferi. I don't hate her, but I can never like overly happy characters, plus, I dislike what she did during the webcomic. She had no redeeming qualities whatsoever, unlike her ancestors.

I have actually taken one of those aspect and land quizzes, mostly out of curiosity, and became the Seer of Heart, and my land is the Land of Candles and Pillars. Fun.

Listen, I'm a fan too, but you've got to understand. Folks on The Escapist forum either don't know what Homestuck is, or they only know it from hearing how annoying its fans are. This thread is gonna get swamped with folks saying "Oh god, don't tell me about Homestuck." Or ignored, because nobody much cares about it, and there can't really be a discussion.

If you want to talk about Homestuck, go to the main MSPA forums, or a variety of other places like Reddit's subreddit for Homestuck here: http://www.reddit.com/r/homestuck

As it is, this thread is kind of flame bait.

I have no idea what Homestuck is.
I just know I'm starting to see it on forums with the same frequency as MLP.
Are they massing an internet fandom takeover?

I don't know what it is, and I don't want to. The fans seem even more irritating than bronies, the artwork sucks and it's written in such a stupid way.

It's a webcomic, only instead of comics, updates are done in animated .gif format, accompanied by text.
It's also a real 'love it or hate it' kinda thing.

I thought they were fairly rare, at least on these forums?

A fair reason. Homestuck is a good webcomic, but God, on the first glance looks like the worst bullshit ever and the fans don't make anything easier.

To the OP: I don't think this thread is gonna work, sorry^^ Try the MSPA forums indeed.

It's a webcomic/game/story thingy. It's a bit too late for them to have a "takeover", since it's been ongoing since 09', but it does pop up every once in a while with a few haters, so I guess in that respect it's like MLP.

OT: I've only gotten to the beginning of act 2. I should probably keep going, but I don't have a lot of time.

Yeah surprisingly enough Homestuck has never actually touched the Escapist community all that much. You will see the occasional avatar from Problem Sleuth or Homestuck but MSPA really hasn't gotten here. Apologies since this thread really wont get too much traffic mate :) unless your goal is to generate interest in the comic in which case have at it.

OT: Started reading back when college started up and some friends got me into it. It took me about 3 weeks to read all the way to current so im pretty proud of myself. Even have a god tier hoodie and homestuck necklace now.

You have a long walk ahead of you full of much sorrow my friend if you are only in the beginning of act 2. The best part about the walk (if you so choose to take it) is that you will love it. Buuuut if you don't have time that's cool to :p

Isn't that linked with the MS Paint Adventures thing?
I remember spending like, a day, reading the MSPA comics before realising that I was about a quarter through at the end of it so I was all like "fuuuuuuuuuuck that."

Welp that went well. Nice try. I like Homestuck over here. It's excellent. Favourite character has to be oh fuck I can't decide. It's all so good. Sure; it might take a while to get into it, but it's so worth it.

Don't the fans write in to determine how the story goes or some such? I don't know anything about it beyond that..and the seeming omnipresence of gray makeup and orange horns that have been showing up at various conventions of late.

What is it about, and is it worth powering through it after so much continuity has already piled up?

Personally, I love Homestuck. I love the MSPA style of narrative (which I have aped for myself a couple times) and admire the absolute insanity that must be boiling inside of Andrew Hussie's brain to produce such a layered work.

That said, crazy Homestuck fans annoy me. Then again, crazy fans of any flavor annoy me. :/

That's the webcomic one of my friends with generally poor tastes talks about.
Everything he told me about it seems to make it look not so good to me.
He could be wrong though.

It started out being driven by fan suggestion but the fan base grew beyond that being viable.

As for whether it is worth powering through, that really depends on how much time you have on your hands and how fast you are at reading. Reading time can vary wildly. I would personally say it is well worth reading, but then I do have pretty much as much time as I want to spend on it.

The best way, I think, to describe Homestuck is long periods of surreal conversation and bizzare humour mixed with brief periods of world-destroying violence.

Because all the cool stuff is condensed into the flash animations and the chatlogs take a while to read, the comic's pacing is all over the place. It's easy to start contemplating suicide when you click the 'show chatlog' button and another half-mile of drivel appears. You don't dare to skip any of it, however, because of the off chance that some nugget of the impossibly labrynthine plot is contained in the dialogue.

I could go on in more detail, but suffice to say Homestuck has plenty of flaws. The characters are often idiots. There's far too many of them (last count, 36 with speaking parts and loads more without). The attempts at humour fall flatter than a guy jumping off an office block.

And yet, I'm still a religious reader, checking up every friday. I check the Tvtropes page for nuggets information. Despite being a real ***** to slog through at times, it's still worth a read.

Because let's face it; where else can you see a stand-off between a power-gaming Alien Pirate, a Juggalo Alien and anEevil Harry Potter Alien get broken up by the arrival of a Lesbian Alien Vampire with a chainsaw?
