Homeworld Remastered: To pre-order or not to pre-order

So, I only happened to find out that Homeworld Remastered is almost done a week or two ago, when footage showed up on my youtube channel. It looks pretty nice, and given the kind of hassle it is to get my original HW1 to run these days, much less run with something other than the crappiest graphical drivers, I'm inclined to buy it anyway.

BUT... this is Gearbox. Aliens: Collonial Marines looked great too, until it was released. And I'm having trouble telling whether the footage shown on youtube and other sites is from people or game journalists who have actually had some hands-on with it.

Any Homeworld fans out here who can shed some light on this? Should I pre-order, or ignore the 15% discount and wait for the reviews?

Waiting for the reviews is always a good and safe idea. 15% discount will reappear (in even greater quantity) a month or two down the line.

Now, as a fan of the original series and as somebody who saw the graphical improvements I feel the game might deserver a preorder. After all, the original story is still there, the soundtrack is still there, the units are still there. The bigger question is: did they do a good job of improving the graphics and is it worth it?

For me, Homeworld 2 was gorgeous but I simply cannot play homeworld 1 ever since enjoying homeworld 2. This gives me an opportunity to enjoy the very first game yet again.

Finally, they are adding "BETA" multiplayer. Always be suspicious of anything in beta after release.

TL.DR
The original game is good this is a graphic improvement + possible revitalized multiplayer.

Never preorder video games regardless of its brand. The concept of scarcity in video games is so far removed from reality for almost every game that there is no functional need for it other than publishers trying to pull a fast one on you. Do not give publishers your money for a product sight unseen. Wait for reviews for everything, preferably from multiple sources tempered with your own reasoning skills. Just because the game is a remaster or whatever doesn't mean it will run properly out of the figurative box or actually be any good.

No point in preordering. It's not like it will be hard to find or out of print. Wait for the reviews and confirmation that it runs well and has no bugs. If money is an issue, you can wait for a better deal than 15% eventually.

I liked both games, and while I wouldn't mind having a shiner version, it's not worth the pre-order. Right now, I'm curious if it's going to be anything more then "The same but with a shiner coat of paint".

new ui, hugely improved graphics, brought back the voice actors to redo some bits, redid some of the music (hope they dont touch the initial piece), plus your choice of the original untouched versions or the updated ones.

from the game play i saw it captures the old school homeworld feel with new additions

(guess who preordered it already)

I played a lot of HW2 and I had mixed feelings when gearbox bought the rights. Then I heard the Original team was working on it and that raised my hopes.

But then I saw this.

And I was pretty much sold. Pre-ordered it as it wasn't that expensive and I never played HW1 so... Yeah. Too bad Cataclysm wasn't included but I am looking forward to it.

There's no pre-order discount, no bonuses etc.

Also it's a Gearbox game not called Borderlands, so waiting at least for the early reviews, and criticism.

Then I'll consider whether to get it at full price, or wait for a discount :)

It's currently discounted by 15%, roughly $5 USD.

Given that Gearbox is working with the original developers I'd say there's reason to be slightly optimistic about the single-player component. If nothing else the package includes the original games, although it's unclear if they've added proper widescreen support.

yeah this is the crux of it. Part of me wants to wait, and get it for a larger discount, but part of me wants it to do really well, so they might decide to try and remaster Cataclysm, my personal favorite of the series.

I've seen extensive gameplay footage they've shown off, and it looks great. They even have a lot of the original creative team working on the remastering. Everything I've seen implies that this really is a labor of love from this team at Gearbox. that they really love the series, wanted to polish it up, and felt it was a good enough IP to be worth the investment to do so. I think they're genuine, and so I am compelled to get it pre-order.

Personally, I still love the original HW, so having the improved graphics is just icing on the cake. Even if the game is "just as good as the original" then I'm perfectly happy with it. If they don't make the game worse, which I don't see how they could, when they're really just updating the graphics and OS for the new systems, then I'm less inclined to be hesitant to pre-order.

I'm probably going to go ahead and pre-order it. Mostly because this isn't an unknown quantity, like some new game is. I know what Homeworld is, I've played it, loved it. It's not a total mystery on whether or not I'll like the game. They're basically just making it look better, and play on my current computer. There really isn't a downside in this situation for me.

This is the only reason I'm even considering it. Homeworld is solid gold and getting both games remastered at this price is a steal...but I really don't like preordering games anymore.

I'll probably give into the temptation sometime between now and release. I loved Homeworld.

I don't know if it is accurate to call it a pre-order, seeing as how the actual game has been out for a decade. If all they are doing is updating the graphics and sounds, then there isn't really much of the risk you'd typically associate with a pre-order.

It's odd, I look at the original footage and think, "Didn't the game look waaay better than that when it came out?" Then I look at the remastered footage and think, "Yeah, THAT'S what I remember seeing." Homeworld 2 looked so gorgeous when it came out, so pristine in the details that it's hard to remember it the way it actually was. I think my brain remastered its graphics long before Gearbox did.
