The scandal!

http://www.change.org/petitions/daily-wildcat-fire-your-cartoonist-editor-in-chief-and-copy-editor#share

Figure this is something the people at the escapist can get behind~ Gist of it, the University of Arizona newspaper, "The Daily Wildcat" Allowed for a comic giving of homophobic sentiments to be published.

The transcript of the comic is present in the petition link provided.

Escapist, how does this make you feel? =)

Being an attendee of this university, I'd personally like to see the people that made this possible promptly dismissed from service ^^

I dunno how I feel about this. On the one hand people should be free to say and publish what ever they like while on the other hand this is really offensive and on the magical third hand I did let out a titter.

I guess the best way to place my thoughts are that there is a time and a place for this joke and a school newspaper is not the place and this really is not the time.

Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequence. That's all that needs to be said.

Or in other words, people can say whatever they want. Once they've said their piece, they've already exercised said freedom, so whatever comes afterwards has nothing to do with their freedom of speech.

The joke seemed to me to be aimed more at taking the mickey out of homophobes, if anyone. The dad character is clearly meant to come across as a bit of a dickhead.

That said, the editor should be fired for allowing pun based comics into his newspaper in the 21st century

To be honest it's a uni newspaper, sick jokes always offend someone but are still funny,
For instance South Park. I laughed at it because obviously its a parody on homophobes.

I think people just need to lighten up all this pc bullshit is driving me mad, but there does need to be a line.

I think race should not be joked about but religion and sexual preference and any other choice believe or life style is fair game.

"Aha ha ha ha ha but seriously I'm calling social services."

I would have said this is more "homophobic parents can be extremist assholes" rather then.....I don't know, I'm not quite sure how this is homophobic: "gay people make bad puns"?

Hrrrm. While clearly in dubious taste the whole comic was a set-up for the rather contrived pun "fruit roll-up". I'd generously suggest that making a homophobic statement wasn't the cartoonist's first and foremost objective. Even so it does alienate an already sidelined minority group, so some kind of formal apology would probably be in order.

You. You are stupid.

If you're not exercising high-end sarcasm here, then.. well, you... you are stupid. I hope a cop beats you to within an inch of your life after you said something. No freedom from consequence brah. . . That's all that needs to be said brah . .
See, that's you exercising your freedom of speech. Do I think it should be illegal for you to have said that you hope I get beaten within an inch of my life? No, I don't. Has anyone actually prevented you from saying it? No. Were you free to say it? Yes, you were.

But don't think there won't be consequences.

Just like the Dixie Chicks lost their endorsements for attacking Bush Jr., just like Hank Williams Jr. lost his endorsements after attacking Obama, Freedom of Speech does not mean Freedom From Consequence. You are free to say what you want, but your right to freedom of speech ends where it hurts others.
You're hurting yourself. Derp.

When you give up the proper right to freedom of speech, you give it up entirely. I mean, this is such a basic level of understanding that I can't even believe this is a matter of discussion.

I have only ever seen this level of nonsense from neo-cons and the "more active" LGBT community online. I guess Bradley Manning is the physically manifested paradox.

Freedom of speech, if they really feel like saying it they should be able to. If I feel like calling them baboonbutts in return, I should also be able to do that! I couldn't actually view the site you link to though... Does anyone have a link to this comic that works? Would be great to know what I'm actually supposed to be talking about =3.

Problem there:

Race cannot be chosen
Religion can be chosen
Sexual Orientation cannot be chosen.

See the problem?
You have a point about it not being chosen but people laugh at pedo jokes all the time and that isn't chosen, however pedos derserve to die in a pit with fire ants, and gays do not.

Don't get me wrong I have no problem with gay people at all even have a gay friend which is kinda rare In Ireland. But people need to learn to laugh at them selves.

As I'm Irish we get jokes made bout us all the time, even though its rasist we laugh it off do you know why because its funny.

There is a difference between a joke and hate speech.

It's not about not being able to take a joke. People joke about me constantly, because I am quite silly, quite perverted and strange. Of course people make jokes of that! I make jokes about myself for gods sake... There is indeed a difference between a joke and hate speech, but it's at times a pretty fine line... A line many people are blind of, on both sides of the issue...

You did say that sexual preference is a choice though... That's just plain false.
