I've said it before and I'll say it again. I don't care if the main character is gay, as long as they're not constantly in my face with it. Like if it was casually mentioned that he was, it wouldn't make a difference. But knowing game companies, they will constantly mention it for controversy and I am not into that.

Interestingly enough, I find that most RPGs have a tendency toward the gay folk without being parodied in most games. Not necessarily for the main character, but it was still a little spark of realism that made the game something to ponder. The most obvious would be recent stuff like Mass Effect and Dragon Age from Bioware. I don't think I even have to mention it.

But beyond Bioware, I do recall in Oblivion there being a few homosexuals, but they were actually subtle about it. Just a few hints here in there about a persons sexuality. The most obvious one I can think of is a diary entry of a dead guy you were supposed find because his mother was the leader of the Fighter's Guild. I'm sure there are other RPGs that incorporated this addition of homosexuality but in a subtle manner.

it would be pretty cool.. but simultaniously it would be kinda pointless...

i mean, i'm all for gay activism.. hey, im gay myself... but like...

it shouldnt really matter the sexual orientation of a character. gay, straight, or bi it really has no significance to the game as a whole... unless its some crazy dating game.... or the protagonist needs to have a child for whatever reason.

I enjoyed reading your theory on the fact that for most games it never really states their sexuality... and you are right. people just assume that the main character is hetero.

The thing with homosexuality is that it's very recently (maybe past 3-4 decades) become accepted and acknowledged in most of the Western world. In some countries it's still illegal or just not accepted, and that's possibly why it's such a "big thing". Go to most schools ('specially secondary schools, at least in the UK) and you'll possibly find a rather homophobic vibe. "You're gay" is an insult, "that's so gay" means something is bad and so forth.

If you want another example, just look at the White vs Black or Man vs Woman situations. Women have been more-or-less equal since at least World War 2 but there's still prejudice against them in places. Whites and Blacks have been more-or-less equal for some time, too, but there's still a lot of tension. You know what it is? Human nature. Homosexuality is "different" from the norm, therefore it's perceived to be bad.

Note: I'm all for gay equality.

what is actually depressing about the presence of homosexuality in games is that almost every time it's going to be a flamboyant, over-the-top character. As if his sexual preference IS his defining trait... there is no shade of gray here, either the guy is asexual (Halo style) or straight (pick any game)... or a flamboyant gay that speaks in high pitch and wears make up. Come on, it's people we talk about, not cardboard cutouts.

For me the only game that I've played that actually presented a rather serious approach to homosexuality/transgendering was Persona 4, where one male character of the party is completely insecure about his sexuality and while acting up on front of people tried to appear "macho", but deep down he was attracted to men (extra points for the developer for not using "you are just confused card" in a way that derails the character. He accepts his ambiguity and ends up as an openly bisexual character); and one female character that is so frustrated by how the society expects her to behave as a woman that she actually feels that she was born with the wrong gender and dresses and acts as a man (at the end depending of your relationship with her she either falls in love with you or you help her to become openly gay).

The thing is, characters should be like that, more like people, that have thoughts, feelings, emotions and inner conflicts. Even if it's not part of the history itself it would be nice to see more characters who have their sexuality as part of their personalities and not as a means to produce shock/Fanservice/sex sells kind of things, both straight and gay.

i imagine a scene in a gta-like game where you play the gay hero or something and then there´s a cutscene after a fight, like in gta IV when nico commits his first murder. the other guy is down and knows he´s gonna die and yells something like "whaddaya gonna do now, ******, blow me?!" and the gay main character just shoots him in the face and makes the usual tough guy-quote. i know this sounds silly, but i people have to make up their minds that being homosexual does not mean to be a wussy man or a manly woman. maybe addressing homophobic views to the enemies in games could show people how stupid it is. because in the end, homophobia isn´t any better or more justified than racism, antisemitism, chauvinism or all crap.

He's got a point - usually it doesn't come in to it. I think that Master Chief and Gordan Freeman were a bit busy saving the world to talk about their personal lives.

I present a short, one scene play on why Dumbledore is Gay:

JKR: Oh man, I'm not constantly in the spotlight anymore now that I finished the books... What else can I do?
*Little Devil Appears on her shoulder*
LD: Dude, just make Dumbledore gay, that will make everyone flip a shit and love you more.
JKR: But I really haven't hinted at all that he was gay this whole series.
LD: Bullshit it!
Ta-da.

Yeah, Japanese developers don't seem to have a problem with portraying homosexual characters in their games. Sometimes they overdo it and reach stereotypical flamboyance, but MGS's Vamp was awesome.
oh god yes! This is also taking it too far. I remember trying to enjoy the game Enchanted Arms, but one of the sidekick characters was so flamboyantly and in your face gay that it served as a distraction from the rest of the game.

If a character's gay, that's fine... but you can't expect me to reasonably believe that someone can act flamboyantly gay and be a tough guy at the same time.

I don't really care that much about game characters' sexual preferences. IMO, it's best if it's not even spoken about. I mean, really, I'm sick of seeing sex selling every junk out there. Commercials, ads, Tomb Raider, anime, etc.

It's not that I'm frigid, conservative or anything. I'm just sick of seeing sex everywhere I look at.

Well, if i remember right, and someone correct me if im wrong, but you can have homosexual relactionships in Dragon Age Origin, and of corse mass effect, so if anyone has to start having homosexual culture accepted into hte gaming world, Biowere is starting it.
