Personally, Thief 3:

The Cradle.

No discussion.

Edit:

Honourable mention goes to System Shock 2.

And this thread has been done many times before.

The average forum poster is not willing to look past the second(even the first in many cases) page just to find something to post on. So sure it may have been done before, but nobody except those with OCD at the level of anal are going to realy notice/care.

Also Resident evil 4 may not have had as many scary moments as many other horror games, but I said for everyone to post there favourite horror game. Not the horror game they found most scary. And Resident Evil 4 happens to be my favourite horror game.

Indeed. Quite odd. Most sequels that I strongly desire taste more of root beer or perhaps strawberry jam. Perhaps rhubarb is the flavor of horror?

Yep I'm jumping on the silent hill bandwagon, it's hard to choose one out of the series as an absolute favourite though, I suppose 2, but I did like the rest a hell of a lot as well.

Silent Hill 2 for sure. I'm eagerly awaiting Fatal Frame 4 for the Wii, though.
Agreed - No contest. Silent Hill 2 is one of the best games ever made.

No, you didn't get what I said.
I couldn't care less of how many "jump moments" Resident Evil 4 has, I'm saying that Resident Evil isn't a mind fuck horror game, like Condmened, Theif or System Shock.

It's a game where startling you makes it scary as a rule. Not disturbingly horrifying as Thief or System Shock or Fear.

There should be some sort of division between psychologically scary games, the ones that affect you in the long run and that you have nightmares about and the ones who make you jump and give you some cheap scares.
Alright, fair enough. As far as 'Jump style" scares go Resident Evil 4 is my No.1 pick.

As far as psychological fear goes. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.

Also, If I had to pick a single level in a game not intended to be scary... I suppose the boss fight against The Fury in MGS3 would win out. The boss fight isnt even scary but it is definately intimidating that no matter what you do he can always find where your hiding.

Yep. Most beautiful story ever. Sure the combat was clunky, but story and atmosphere certainly made up for it.

RE 4 is absolutely a horror game! Sure, it was more of a basic shooter, but you tell me that you didn't nearly piss yourself the first time you heard the chainsaw zombie!

Well, that would be your opinion. Not a fact. Making it bold doesn't make it right, Mr. Groovy Pants. I found the game to be a great horror experience, even with the action elements.

Resident Evil 1.

Extremely tense, even when you knew what was coming. That dog jumping through the window got me every time. As a kid all of my trousers were various shades of brown.

Dead Space - on my 4th playthrough and it still made me jump a few times.

FEAR - Little girls with black hair are scary

RE2 - Damn that licker in the interragation room

RE3 - S.T.A.R.S.

FEAR 2 Demo - Grown women with black hair are scarier

What is your absolute favourite horror game so far?

For me?
Resident Evil 4.

Although im gonna be getting House of The Dead: Overkill and Dead Space soon so im not entirely sure my opinion wont change.

Also, if you happened to come by a horror game you think wasnt well-known enough, feel free to share it!
I laughed my way through Resident Evil 4. Not scary at all.
But the scariest ever... Man that's a tough one. I honestly don't know.
