RE 4 is absolutely a horror game! Sure, it was more of a basic shooter, but you tell me that you didn't nearly piss yourself the first time you heard the chainsaw zombie!
Can't say that I did. I didn't find anything horrifying about the game, but it wasn't bad. That tense horror found in older RE's just wasn't there... probably because I felt more like I could deal with every situation without a problem while I had to make sure I counted my bullets after each fight.

I just didn't have the same feeling in RE4. It was too run and gun for me. It was very much like Parasite Eve instead of RE.

Also, the Cradle never scared me. It was more mind-fuckish. However, for some weird reason, one of the Thief 2 levels always scared me. Always. It was the one where you had to rob a bank (I think it was a bank... maybe it was just a big castle where there was a ball going on). Also, the ape level. What the fuuuuuck.

I don't know. Seems anything I play through the first time.

Doom 3 is really not scary at all anymore, but it was when I first played it.
System Shock 2 I remember being quite scary.
Resident Evil 2 was scary when I played it alone.

I'm not sure...

I guess I'll go with System Shock 2 for now. ^^;

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem for the Gamecube is easily the greatest horror game ever made... i can not say enough good things about this game... god, i want a sequel so bad i can taste it...
I will agree to a large extent. I really liked the game, except where it gave you weapons and expected you to run around and shoot things, and then it felt like a mediocre shooter *CoughMarshRefineryCough*. However, the part with the Polyps near the end freaked the crap out of me for a couple days.

If anything I would learn toward fatal frame. I just don't feel like the horror genre has anything incredibly frightening yet. I look forward to one though.

FEAR - Little girls with black hair are scary

FEAR 2 Demo - Grown women with black hair are scarier
So, are you constantly freaked out when you walk around in public?
Nope. Don't go out in public where they might be ;)

A bit OT, but I just imagine you strolling a by a Hottopic and screaming "Oh my god, it's like an Alma training ground!" Only to promptly set the store ablaze.

On topic though, I would probably have to say Fatal Frame was the scariest, but Silent Hill 2 was the horror game I enjoyed the most.

The first Silent Hill, because I was new to the genre at that time and it was pretty scary for me.

But The Cradle level from Thief 3 gave me the creeps worse than anything else I've ever played, so I agree about that one.

F.E.A.R. gets my vote, it was not really the replica soldiers sneaking around and the ninjas attacking from nowhere.. i found it far more scary when nothing at all happened, you just walked on waiting for something, anything, to happen and i always kept thinking "Oh fuck, Alma.." at every sound or motion in the shadows

Seconded!

Also, still to this day no matter which RE I am playing Zombie dogs will always haunt my nightmares. Plus the regenerators were pretty freaky.

I actually liked Dead Space. I don't really care what Yatzhee thinks about it, because all genres need to eventually adapt or die. Dead Space adapted.
I agree. You should really try playing it with high quality headphones on, I play wearing a skullcrusher multimedia headset and you would not believe how much more intence it is.

Number of friends that have nearly pissed themselves when I made them play deadspace: 3(so far......)

Resident Evil 4 isn't horror.

Personally, Thief 3:

The Cradle.

No discussion.

Edit:

Honourable mention goes to System Shock 2.

And this thread has been done many times before.

The average forum poster is not willing to look past the second(even the first in many cases) page just to find something to post on. So sure it may have been done before, but nobody except those with OCD at the level of anal are going to realy notice/care.

Also Resident evil 4 may not have had as many scary moments as many other horror games, but I said for everyone to post there favourite horror game. Not the horror game they found most scary. And Resident Evil 4 happens to be my favourite horror game.
thank you finally some one said it

More of an "Action/Horror" game, but you are both right in one way or another, also can't wait for Resident Evil 5(Xbox 360 version).
