I can't believe no one's mentioned Bioshock yet.

But for me, the best game in terms of horror is The White Chamber.

Haven't really played too many scary games... though I DO want to buy Silent Hill 2.

And play it only from 11-1PM during the summer in a neat little cottage with no shadows.

I'm immensely and madly in love with Dead Space. It was my 2008 GoTY and I think the scariest game I've played.

Unfortunately I started gaming with the ps1, and my library consisted of Crash Bandicoot, so I'm to young and noobish to play all the 'classics' I hear about like Silent Hill 2(although I'm finding Homecoming as scary as being forced to eat six bowls of shit.) Plus I didn't start getting into horror games until recently.

Also, I'm playing through Call of Cthulu and it's absolutely horrifying. But I keep fucking up under
pressure while psychos chase me around a hotel, lol.

longwinded posts ftw.

The first Big Daddy I shot, I didn't expect it to react so damn fast. I paused the game to take a breather for a second before being hurled into the wall. When all the lights go off and you hear classical music and enemies screaming, that was a fun scene.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem for the Gamecube is easily the greatest horror game ever made... i can not say enough good things about this game... god, i want a sequel so bad i can taste it...
I will agree to a large extent. I really liked the game, except where it gave you weapons and expected you to run around and shoot things, and then it felt like a mediocre shooter *CoughMarshRefineryCough*. However, the part with the Polyps near the end freaked the crap out of me for a couple days.
the insanity effects totally made this game for me.... they more than made up for the spotty gunplay....

My favorite horror game is and always will be the original Clocktower. No other horror game hit me on a level as powerful as that one.

F.E.A.R. Serious mindfuckery in that game. Also the first horror game I've ever played (unless you count the meat circus level in Psychonauts. *shudder*), so it holds a special place for me.Here's hoping the sequel's as good, this Tuesday, whoo!

I don't think anything was quite as terrifying as playing Dungeon Master on the Amiga as a 6 year old and going down stairs in a dark creepy dungeon knowing something nasty is going to jump out at you.

I thought Bioshock created a superb atmosphere, and was genuinely disturbing rather than scary, even more so than System Shock in my opinion.

Penumbra. The ONLY "scary" game that actually managed to frighten me out of my mind. Not with swarms of zombie monsters, but with a perfect lonely atmosphere and plenty of figuring out what happened before you went there and what the hell could be happening in the room to your left. Lots of previous and paralell action, and not much is explained to you really. Instead, you WILL lock yourself into a room and try to put together the pieces, because you want to figure it out. That's what i call good storytelling.

*slaps forehead* Resident Evil 4 is a horror game in title only: I'm the biggest coward there ever was, and I barely felt my pulse speed up during the entire game! After seeing endless reams of perfect 10s and "best game of its generation" claims, I was happy to find a cheap copy of the thing, but have regretted it ever since. "Resi 4" and "horrifying" cannot be placed in the same sentence.

Silent Hill 4 - The Room.

I literally couldn't play it. Freaked me the fuck out.

You cant beat the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for creepy atmosphere, that game spent such a long time drawing you into its world and thoroughly creeping you out, that when the scares finally came you were sitting on the edge of your seat, begging the game to relieve the tension.
Seconded. Those Psychic-monsters still make me physically shudder when I come across them. That's VERY bad when you have a mouse with over 1,000 DPI. I usually have to pause the game to catch my breath.

Silent Hill 1-4, Fatal Frame II, and Doom 3 were all well and good. A few scares and jumps here and there. HOWEVER, if you people want something that has you tense from beginning to end, I got something for you: Siren. (or 'Forbidden Siren' depending where you're from)

Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, Doom, System Shock's, all the enemies can be dealt with. They can, and will be killed. Siren doesn't play that game. You can't kill these bastards, shit, you rarely even get 'tools' to fight them. The idea is to stay out of sight, and run!

(It should be noted: The setting for Siren is what Silent Hill was originally supposed to be.)
