I have never played a horror game in my life but I really want to try it. I have been considering getting a few games but I do not which one will leave the best impression on me. I have a wii, an xbox 360 and a PC. So Escapist, can you help me out?

Edit: Apparantly Left 4 Dead counts, but I hated left 4 dead because it is way too short and feels unfinished. Also its not scary.

Edit Edit: I want a survival horror experience.

Get a PS2 and get silent hill 2. That's really the only good horror game I have played.

I don't play PC, so I'm going to go with Left 4 Dead.

I haven't played L4D2, but I'd imagine that would be even better.

Resident Evil.

4 was like an action/adventure shooter with a horror overtone, its the only one I've ever played and I liked it. Wii is best for that one.

Condemned: Criminal Origins.

Also might help to describe what type of horror experience you want.

If your looking for shock horror, try Dead Space.

Man, that one spot on the ______ with the ______ was freaky.
(took out words so I can't spoil)

Bioshock may not be considered a true "Horror" game but, it scared the #$@#!%@ out of me the first time i played it.
As for the wii, Silent Hill:Shattered Memories is supposed to be good for a scare, not excellent but good.

See if the Xbox version of Fatal Frame works on the 360. If so, play it. It's easily the most terrifying game I've ever played. If not, get a PS2: I think that version's easier to find. Point is, that game was absolutely horrifying. Great game.

If you don't want to get a new console, try Condemned: Criminal Origins for the Xbox 360.

One of the greatest horror games of the generation, with a very unique story and mechanical concept.

The sequel was crap, but Condemned: Criminal Origins was really a great boon for fans of the genre.

Definitely Condemned. The first one though. I didn't really enjoy the second. By far the scariest game I've ever played.

Gotta agree here. The Fatal Frame series is the best horror series out there, though you also can't go wrong with Silent Hill 2.

If you have a good PC, try The Void, a surreal horror game from Russia, or The Path, a surreal horror game from God knows where.

For the Xbox 360, I recommend F.E.A.R. 2 or any of the Condemned games. I also feel inclined to recommend Dead Space since it's a pretty good game, even though it's not that scary.

And for the Wii, try the Fatal Frame game; it's a Japanese horror game, so be sure to bring an extra pair of underwear when you play it.

Yes it's very good, except all the backtracking for stuff really ruined the atmosphere for me, once I'd walked through the same hallway a dozen times I got used to the creepy atmosphere. Also the last two boss fights are the very definition of annoying.

OP: The remake of the first Resident Evil is decently scary, as is Dead Space, but the crown jewels of the survival/horror genre (For me) are Condemned: Criminal Origins and Condemned 2: Bloodshot. Although those may be too scary for someone new to survival/horror.

Definitely check this out. Even if it's just a rental.

I can't really describe the feeling (It's like a cross between nostalgia, but with a twist,) but going back and rewriting Silent Hill's storyline just pleased my inner child to no end.

Aside from the bizarre Tar sections and the FUCKING BEAR, the game really didn't do that much to keep the suspense going.
