I have been mainly contemplating Resident Evil 4 (wii), Resident Evil 5 (xbox) mainly for the gameplay not for the scare, Dead Space (xbox) or Condemned (xbox).

Definitely Condemned. The first one though. I didn't really enjoy the second. By far the scariest game I've ever played.
Aside from the bizarre Tar sections and the FUCKING BEAR, the game really didn't do that much to keep the suspense going.
The second one just didn't have the same... life as the first. A huge disappointment in my book. I meant that the first one was the scariest game I've ever played. Just in case you misread it due to my poor word order.

I read it correctly. I was trying to agree with your point on the sequel. I just forgot to shorten the post to reflect that.

I have never played a horror game in my life but I really want to try it. I have been considering getting a few games but I do not which one will leave the best impression on me. I have a wii, an xbox 360 and a PC. So Escapist, can you help me out?

Edit: Apparantly Left 4 Dead counts, but I hated left 4 dead because it is way too short and feels unfinished. Also its not scary.

Edit Edit: I want a survival horror experience.
Okay, you need to play Silent Hill 2. You might be able to find a used copy for PS2/Xbox/or (maybe) PC between $19-35 price range. The first game for PS1 made me figuratively shit my 15yr old pants when I played it some time ago and the others up till four will not dissapoint.

There is also instant horror classics like Fatal Frame and Resident Evil wanna-bees like Clocktower(1-3), the Thing, and Cold Fear. But if you just want gore then try out Manhunt, Dead Rising (for laughs), or Left 4 Dead.

Resident Evil 1, 2 & 3. Avoid that piece of shit 4 & 5 like the plague.
Silent Hill series.
Fatal Frame and Clock Tower.
Oh and no. L4D does not count. Ever.
I was being sarcastic about L4D counting. I always forget sarcasm doesn't work on the internet.

Condemned: Criminal Origins is the game that got me into survival horror. Played many since then and Condemned is still my favorite one. It is also alot more accessible that Fatal Frame, Silent Hill, etc. It is also alot scarier than RE4, RE5 and Dead Space(Dead Space is awesome though.)

Condemned: Criminal Origins (PC, Xbox) -- it's more of an action game, so you should find the pacing to be very enjoyable, and it's probably the scariest game I've played. The fun part about it is that it's creepy because of atmosphere and enemy AI, not because of cheesy scripted events and cutscenes.

Silent Hill 2 (PS2) -- probably the best you can get with "old school" style survival horror, which is more like a third-person adventure puzzler than an action game. Resident Evil (the original, or the GCN remake) is very similar but hasn't aged as well as SH2.

Obscure (PC) -- old school survival horror starring a group of high school kids who get trapped in their school and have to use their unique abilities to escape. I'd say it's even better than the original Resident Evil, characters can die (permanently) which adds to the survival aspect, combat is tough, puzzles are satisfying. Best played with the unique Co-Op mods.

F.E.A.R. (PC, PS3, Xbox) -- very straightforward FPS which I found to be cutting edge back in 2005. The firefights were incredibly intense with very intelligent enemy AI and level design. It's mixed in with a bunch of horror elements which should set the tone for you.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (PC) -- more of a survival/horror FPS. Very real, complex, and intelligent ballistics combined with horrifying atmospheres and mutant enemies, most of the gameplay revolves around simple survival in the dilapidated zone of Chernobyl.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (PC) -- not explicitly a horror game, but it's a very dark, gothic role-playing game with vampires and werewolves. A few sections are genuinely frightening and qualify as horror, so this would be a good way to ease into the genre, especially if you like RPGs.

Penumbra: Overture (PC) -- a fairly straightforward first-person adventure game with some interesting innovations to the genre. In terms of horror, I found the atmosphere to be chilling but not really that frightening. Still worth a shot.

Doom 3 (PC, Xbox) -- simple FPS action with a lot of claustrophobic horror; narrow corners, almost pitch black screen, monsters that pop out from the darkness, etc. Not the most sophisticated horror experience but startling and freaky if you play it at the right times.

Resident Evil 4 (GCN, PS2, PC, Wii) -- lots and lots of intense action with horrifying imagery. It's got a lot of "Survival" going on at the very beginning, but by the time you get used to it, it becomes more of an action game. Very, very good game.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (GCN) -- very simple gameplay, but it features unique "sanity effects" that completely screw with your head. I won't spoil them, but this is a game that really gets under your skin through psychological stuff, rather than simple blood and guts and disturbing imagery.

Alone in the Dark (PC, Xbox, PS3) -- kind of a bad example, really, but it's a very "horror" game with some interesting gimmicks, nice cinematic gameplay sequences, but unfortunately a lackluster execution (I hear a recent patch fixes the real issues, though).

There are dozens of others which I haven't played but hear good things about; the above are ones which I've played and can attest are pretty enjoyable and iconic games. There are others which I omitted from the list because they're generic or generally bad games. If I had to narrow any of the above down, I'd strongly suggest Condemned: Criminal Origins, Silent Hill 2, and Eternal Darkness. Vampire Bloodlines only if you like RPGs, STALKER and FEAR only if you're big on FPSes. The others are good stepping stones from there.

I don't play PC, so I'm going to go with Left 4 Dead.

I haven't played L4D2, but I'd imagine that would be even better.

Bioshock may not be considered a true "Horror" game but, it scared the #$@#!%@ out of me the first time i played it.
When you first get the shotgun, and the lights turn off?

The Condemned series is pretty good, what console do you have, or do you play PC?

Well, I was going for a more 'Hitman-esque' approach, but WTF, right?
As long as the man goes down and stays down, I'm all smiles.
Actually, not really all smiles, just an evil smirk of contentment and contempt.
