I've been playing a lot of horror games recently, and I was wondering how the rest of the community felt about the genre.

I've had a love of horror games for a long time, starting with the the first Fatal Frame game back on the PS2. I was pretty young when I played it time, so it probably wasn't the best idea for me to be playing it in the first place. Even still, I really enjoyed the game (despite it causing several minor heart attacks) and ever since then I've been infatuated with the genre. Most of my gaming friends don't like horror games and find it weird that I enjoy being scared.

What about the rest of you? Do you enjoy horror games? If so, why?

I did. I played the Fatal Frame series, Silent Hill (stopped around 4, though), F.E.A.R., etc.
They're fantastically fun when you're spazzing with some friend but it gets a little old after awhile.

Certainly, and the reasoning of course is that my mind is geared towards being entertained by the macabre. I like horror games, horror books, horror shows/movies... Just to understand, I also like non-horror things as well, but the point is that this is one of the venues I enjoy.

I just got off of a five hour stint on Killing Floor. Good times "asplodin" heads. Nothing more to it than that.

I do. I love a good horror game.

The problem is that there a so few around these days that actually offer genuine scares. The last horror game I played was Amnesia and I think it is an absolute masterpiece.

I love 'em.

Problem is, I can never find the damn things.

Most games that call them selves "horror" are just action games with ugly enemies.

Yes, it's a pity that the genre is shifting more and more towards the Resident Evil 4 style of survival-horror.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Resident Evil 4. I just didn't find it anywhere near as scary as games like Fatal Frame and Silent Hill.

Horror games are my favourite genre, and unfourtunately the hardest to find. I used to hate horror as a genre but I played Fatal Frame 2 a long time ago and I've been hooked since. I'll usually play one by myself or with a friend and sometimes a bunch of my friends will get together for a marathon.
Good ones are impossible to find, it's once every few years I find one that's even remotely well done, I find if your willing to accept action horror games you can acquire a larger library. If you stick to strictly survival horror then your out of luck, there's usually only one decent (not even good) one every few years.

My thoughts exactly.

Hopefully Silent Hill 8 will satisfy. Silent Hill is still my favorite horror game series and the comics aren't too bad either(especially the motion comics on the PSP).

I love horror games. There just aren't very many I think are good.

Silent Hill 1-4 ranged from good(1&4) to amazing(2&3).
Eternal Darkness made me say "oh fuck!" more than any other game.
I'm not normally a fan of "Japanese horror" but Fatal Frame 1-3 were really good.
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is good, although it gets less fun when they give you weapons.

I especially love when a non horror game has a "horror level". Like Thief 3's Shalebridge Cradle or Vampire the Masquerade's Ocean House. You get the feeling the designers went all out to make that level memorable.

Lets face it, the genre has little to celebrate recently;
Resident Evil made me fill my shorts many times, but that series has gone stale.

I love a good horror, but nothing much has attracted me recently.
On the PS3 Dead Space 2 wasn't really scary, just repetitive, and after a short time
the horror was knowing that the monsters would 'jump out' at certain places, and I would be
doing this for another X levels, so it just turned into a grind.

I've recently got Amnesia for the PC, and first impressions are good.
It's focus is that you remain unarmed, health is reduced by the levels of light and insanity.
Making it quite simply 'a run and hide' game, its a nice twist.

I would quite like Guillermo Del Toro to direct a game a la Pan's Labryinth.

I'm not sure if you've heard of this from your comment, but just incase you haven't, he is.

:D I'm really hopeful for it as his work on quite a few dark, horror-esque movies have been fantastic on the O.O side of things. I can't wait for monster designs to be released.

I love horror games, specifically the resident evil series. The things that I love about resident evil are too numerous to list but the thing I love about horror games in general is the fantastic use of audio. Even games that don't have horror as a central theme have used audio effectively to create some fucking terrifying places (that would be shalebridge cradle from thief: deadly shadows).

Honestly, I'm not much of a person to like horror games. The closest thing I've played to horror is probably Resident Evil 5 and that's basically more of an actiony type game. I guess if I actually tried to play one I might get into them, but I just don't want to take that first step.
