I have a lot of trouble finding friends who like the horror genre at all (be it stories, movies, or video games) and therefore don't have friends who can recommend me something good.

So I'm asking for any recommendations on horror movies. It doesn't really matter to me if it's combined with gore or if it's a jump scare movie. What are some good titles out there? Perhaps we can even talk about them.

I recently saw this British flick named 'Kill List'. It's one hell of a movie, starting out as a cinema verite crime drama of sorts before veering into some truly strange and unsettling territory. Also quite funny at times, if you dig gallows humor.

I sort of recognize that name, came out 2012 or 2011 didn't it?
Crime drama huh? I'll have to look into it.

They. The movie They is one that not a lot of people I know watched, but it scared the hell out of me because of its theme. The monsters in it are just plain genius. It's also on Netflix right now, so double win. I also don't scary easy, this is one of about 3 or 4 movies I found genuinely scary.

Hmm...the Lady in Black was good. A remake or so I'm told, but it certainly had a lot of "oh shit" moments. Erm..."Insidious" was interesting though it certainly had it's flaws, "Mama" was different though not necessarily a horror film, depending on your standards.

Meh, horror is subjective though right? "Saw" versus "Thirteen Ghosts" versus "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari". It all depends.

EDIT: Stephen King's "Rose Red" and "The Mist" are worth mentioning too.

I wouldn't call the Saw series much of a horror series, but I enjoyed the hell out of it. Dat Tobin Bell. The Descent was quite top, although it's sequel wasn't as good (But still worth a watch). The Spanish [REC] series is fantastic. The first two scared the hell out of me, although the third dropped the found film style, and adopted a bit of dark comedy. But still good. The US remake of the first one, Quarantine, which was mostly a reshoot in English, was also good, and has Jennifer Carpenter in it (Mostly known from Dexter, isn't in enough stuff).

Alo, Dead Set. It's a English TV mini-series based in Big Brother. It's got zombies, and they run, but it scared the hell out of me, especially the last episode (Where a mob of running zombies just cream over a group of survivours in a second, unlike US ones where they fight off and maybe lose a guy or two (Shut up, World War Z. Everyone would've been ass fucked on the way to that plane).

The Thing. It's a great movie with a terrible modern sequel. I guess it's part suspense and part gore-fest, one moment you are wondering who is The Thing and the next someone is having their hands chewed off whilst a head sprouts legs and scuttles off. It also has dogs.

And there is a Call of Cthulhu film which is silent and is pretty good if you like HP Lovecraft and the idea of a modern-made silent movie.

Try "In The Mouth of Madness", it's pretty cool. Also, Videodrome is amazing. The remake of House on Haunted Hill was funny and worth renting at least.

Some of my favorites:

Jacob's Ladder
The Cell
The Frighteners
13 Ghosts (the newer one)
The House on Haunted Hill (both versions)
Halloween (the original)
Urban Legend (mostly because of Alicia Witt, and how terrible it is)
Re-Cycle

I feel like I am forgetting several.

Oooh ooh, teacher (waves hand furiously) I know this one! I got a tonne of DVDs, and always jump at the chance to push new flicks on to people.

Horror, as the good person above said, is subjective. Comedies can be classics (Blazing Saddles, Kentucky Fried Movie), musicals (Singing in the Rain) or teen genre, or even based on a certain director/producer' oeuvre, your Apatow's, Mel Brooks, Monty Python, Edgar Wright etc. Horror's pretty much the same, I guess. Check out the list below - apologies to other Horror fans as these titles overlap their categories....but meh.

PG13 Fun - Some good chills, usually higher budget fare - these flicks may have a few jump scares, but it's great if you want a movie for scaring your little brothers and sisters, without teaching them what drugs and boobs are - Insidious, Poltergeist, the Ring, Signs/ Sixth Sense, The Others (if you don't know the twist, do check it out), and Jaws.

Genre Mashup - An American Werewolf in London, Shaun of the Dead, Dog Soldiers, Predator/Alien (only fragments of Horror in these movies, but I argue them in nonetheless) Pan's Labyrinth, Black Swan, Repo the Genetic Opera, Army of Darkness

SFX/Gore/T*tties - If you love movies over the top - check out Piranha 3D, Friday the 13th(any of em), Hellraiser 1(gore, gore gore) The Thing, Hostel series/Saw - Dawn of the Dead (the original if you can, though the remake wasn't bad)

Director schtick - Peter Jacksons Braindead (Dead Alive) or Bad Taste - Dario Argento's Suspiria, Tenebrae or Phenomena, Kubrick's version of the Shining, Sam Raimi's Evil Dead - John Carpenter - Halloween, David Lynch...just David Lynch.

Cult Collector - Devil's Backbone, REC (don't watch Quarantine if this available instead - REC has a way better ending) In the Mouth of Madness, Sam Niell in Possession (rare 1981 flick), Jacob's Ladder - and definitely Kill List (it takes a while to get going, mind you) Undead is goofy fun

Foreign Collector - er REC, Ringu, Devil's Backbone - but also Ichi the Killer/ or Audition, a Thai film The Meat Grinder, Inside (creepy French film), Martyrs (really creepy French film), Let the Right one (not very scary, but a great vampire movie)

Horror TV - American Horror Story, Twin Peaks, Walking Dead (haven't actually watched this one yet - but heaps of people recommend it :), Tales of the Crypt, Twilight Zone and the X Files - worth checking out at least, if you ever get the chance to borrow a boxset of someone.

Video Nasties - umm just Wiki that term - the list pushes the R-Rating / X-Rating line to say the least.

Personally, I'd always say The Exorcist as the best horror movie, but not everyone gets spooked by demons. Youtube some of the trailers above and see what grabs you.

Have to second The Descent. Loved it so much I bought it on Blu-ray and it wasn't even that expensive.

Thanks for the info, I'm watching it now.

I try to watch as much horror as possible, partly because I'm desperate for decent horror movies but mostly because I don't scare easily. That's led me to watching a ton of horror movies, most of which whose names I can't remember. I avoid anything with excessive gore because it seems like such a crutch to me; it seems so easy to dump money into a special effects budget as opposed to writing a decent story.

I saw Alex Reid (wow) in The Descent and followed her to the movie Wilderness (2006), which isn't so much horror in its purest sense. I'll watch everything in between like Severance (2006), Black Sheep (2006), Rec, Quarantine, anything and everything. Even small, independent movies can do decent jobs like Salvage (2006). I liked Stake Land (2010) also, simply for where they were willing to go with the story. Of course there are some obvious choices like 30 Days of Night, which I absolutely adore for its sheer brutality, as well as 28 Days Later, and in this case I'd even include The Road because of how uncomfortable it made me.

I even watched Rogue and Black Water, both from 2007. Hell, I even hunted down Dog Soldiers and thought it was decent for what it was.

Surprised that The Shining hasn't been mentioned much, it was a great film.
I'll have to disagree with the descent however, I was bored while watching it.
Not sure if it counts, but Cloverfields was an amazing film in my opinion, really loved it. It's a mix of horror and sci-fi.
Saw The Crazies recently, it was interesting. A different take on the Zombies thing, and took a while to get going while building the suspense.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this one yet so I'll just throw it up.

28 Days Later. I am not sure how many would consider it a horror, but it certainly isn't something I would show a child. Nothing quite captured that end of the world/lonely feel for me as much as that film did. It is kind of a zombie film, but it isn't an action one. It is more about this violent strain of rabies getting out that infects humans after these humanitarians try to break out monkeys that are being tested on, one of the monkeys is infected and bites one of the people setting in motion a deadly panademic across London and the United kingdom.

The story starts with a man waking up in a hostpital after being in a coma, he wakes up 28 days after the outbreak and everyone is gone. Check it out if you haven't yet! :)

I'd be interested to hear what folk aged under 20 think to the Shining, as it was definitely shot at a time where people would have a lot more patience with films in general.
Don't worry, we like it too. Jack N inspired people like Jim Carrey who are really popular now, and contrary to popular belief we don't all have ADD.
Almost forgot, Alien films? I know they're sci-fi, but it's basically horror in space. Aliens is probably my favourite, as it isn't just the typical monster vs innocent young girl plus murdering idiots.
Oh and Sunshine. Not sure if it's what you'd class as horror, but it's close nearer the end.
