They're done by Sam Raimi, it's all intentional. Same with Drag Me To Hell. He just switches between tension and slapstick jokes in a masterful way. You can't keep the viewer scared the whole time, Raimi understood this and just combined the uncomfortable feeling of fear with that other thing people like: laughing.
