I have students come from over seas to study at my place and usually I spend time with them playing games or watching movies together. New one just came yesterday and he really likes horror movies, really scary ones, but I don't know any. We've both seen all the big name classics like The Exorcist, Alien, Halloween, Poltergeist, etc. They are great movies and all but we didn't find them scary at all. (Besides The Thing, that caught me off guard)

So fellow Escapees, what movies gave you nightmares? Made you hide under the covers in a pathetic attempt to shelter you from the darkness? Or stay up all night because you keep thinking of it? And my personal favourite, become paranoid from creaking and knocking noises around your house?

Edit: Tell me how it effected you. I'm going to hire the movies recommended by the people who suffered the worst.

Edit 2: C'mon you lot. I don't want to see just a name or a clip. I want you to share your story's or at least your symptoms. (I hope I'm using that word right)

You might want to look into Eastern Horror films, I can't think of any off the top of my head, but Japan and Korea have a reputation for making horror films that are legitimately frightening.

A few of my favourites are The Thing(1982), The Eye (Chinese version) and The Grudge (Japanese version).

Usually uninterested in horrors, but them three in particular stayed with me for various reasons.

A l'interieur is a good modern day french horror. Claustrophobic, and taking pointers from the classics like Halloween.

As said above, REC is well worth a watch.

The Descent is one of the better horrors from the past decade too.

Seriously though, I can't really think of any movie that actually scared me.

Jacob's Ladder [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob%27s_Ladder_%28film%29].

More psychological horror than slasher horror, though it does have it's fair share of grotesque imagery. Also one of the main inspirations behind the Silent Hill series.

I don't get scared by movies, at the most I get a little creeped out.

I really recommend watching eastern horrors. Avoid all of the american remakes, I haven't seen one that comes close the the feelings the eastern ones invoke (i watched alot of the US versions before realising they were remakes).

The grudge, one missed call, the eye, the ring.

[rec] is definatly worth checking out

Been a while since I've watched any good horror, might have to check out some of the stuff listed here myself.

Check out Braindead. Depending on your stance on gore, it's either hilarious, terrifying, nauseating, or a combination of the three. Not for weak stomachs. I was scared shitless the first time I saw it, but it has grown on me.
Following video contains goriest scene ever filmed in a movie.
