London (CNN) -- A nurse at the hospital that was duped by a prank call from two Australian radio DJs concerning Prince William's pregnant wife, Catherine, has apparently committed suicide, the hospital confirmed Friday.

The nurse "was recently the victim of a hoax call," King Edward VII Hospital said in a media statement.

The DJs impersonated Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles in the prank call, in which some details of the Duchess of Cambridge's condition and care were given.

The nurse who died was the person who first took the hoax call and transferred it through to Catherine's ward, the hospital's public relations company said.

The hospital named her as Jacintha Saldanha and said she had worked there for more than four years as an "excellent nurse," who was well respected by co-workers.

The hospital "had been supporting her throughout this difficult time," the statement said.

The Duchess of Cambridge was discharged from the hospital Thursday after treatment for acute morning sickness.

A St. James's Palace spokesman said: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jacintha Saldanha.

"Their Royal Highnesses were looked after so wonderfully well at all times by everybody at King Edward VII Hospital, and their thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha's family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time."

Separately, a palace spokesman told CNN: "At no point did the palace complain to the hospital about the incident. On the contrary, we offered our full and heartfelt support to the nurses involved and hospital staff at all times."

The hospital's chief executive, John Lofthouse, said, "Everyone is shocked by the loss of a much loved and valued colleague."

London's Metropolitan Police said they were notified around 9:35 a.m. (4:35 a.m. ET) on Friday that a woman was found unconscious. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are treating the death as "unexplained," they said.

Audio of the call posted online suggested a woman spoke briefly to the DJs, who host a show for the 2Day FM radio station in Sydney, before the call was put through to the ward early Tuesday morning.

The hospital said Wednesday that it deeply regretted the call had been put through.

The radio show apologized for the call Wednesday, saying it "was done with light-hearted intentions."

Its two DJs, Mel Greig and Michael Christian, continued to tweet about the call on Thursday and earlier Friday, promising "more on the #royalprank."

The Twitter accounts for the pair have now been taken down.

Talking about the call on air Thursday, Greig said: "They were the world's worst accents ever. We were sure 100 people at least before us would've tried the same thing. ... We were expecting to be hung up on -- we didn't even know what to say when we got through."

Angry comments have been posted on the 2Day FM Facebook page since the news of the nurse's death broke.

"This death is on your conscience," reads one post. Another says, "Blood on your hands."

The radio station has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Yeah so... I don't find the radio station at fault here for the woman's decision to kill herself. I am however shocked that people are getting this agro about it, seems like this is the culture we're creating with that whole anti-bullying nonsense.

...Also the paranoid part of me thinks the royal family was tricked and had the nurse murdered in a real Mafia moment.

Holy shit, talk about bad timing. There's honestly a small part of me that thought the Royal Family would be responsible for this, "Nobody talks about our Royal Babies!!!!!!!"

But I guess we won't know until they run an autopsy what happened to her

I'm sorry, I'm extremely tired and it seems like I'm missing something. Can someone please explain to me the connection between the prank call and the nurse's suicide?

I'm also a bit stumped. There seems to be very little tying the two together.

Where does it say she killed herself? I thought all they know right now is she died...

Honestly no matter which way this story finally lays out the controversy is going to be there like a man hidden in a grassy knoll.

Suicide is suspected but not confirmed.

I'm honestly not sure what connection the OP finds between this and "anti bullying" but I guess once someone has an axe to grind they'll find monsters in every closet.

Hey hop on to the radio host's facebook account or check out the CNN comments. People are actually blaming the radio hosts for her death.

Of course they are. I'm still not sure what that has to do with bullying. Were the radio hosts bullying this woman for years or something? Did I miss some critical element of the story?

I mean, people blamed Marilyn Manson for Columbine. Is that because they thought Manson was a bully? People blame all kinds of stupid bullshit when trying to rationalize shocking or upsetting events. For example, some people might even blame "anti bullying" when people blame pranksters for an apparent suicide. Imagine that!

Marilyn Manson created art, that people assumed influence Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold to shoot up their school.

Not the same as...

Radio hosts pull a prank, one of the victims of said prank apparently commits suicide as a result.

Gee, kinda sounds like what happen to that Rutgers kid no? >.> I know I'm not retarded there is a resemblance here.

You mean the prank where a gay man was outed in a society that can still be profoundly gay-hostile? The one that broke privacy laws and carried a jail sentence of up to five years JUST for broadcasting the video? That prank? I don't know about you, but if that was MY prank...and I like to prank...I'd feel pretty fucking responsible.

Hospital prank seemed pretty mild. I don't know that I'd hang up the phone, think "I got duped!" and pop off to kill myself. Who knows though, that country can be crazy about their Royals. Maybe she got death threats. Maybe her job was on the line. Maybe she was already depressed and this was unrelated. Maybe she died of natural causes and it wasn't a suicide at all.

I'm sure the pranksters do feel mildly responsible. After all, they are. There's a slight risk, when you prank someone. If something bad happens as a result of your prank, you end up with egg on your face.

I still don't really see what any of this has to do with anti-bullying. Is anti-bullying a bad thing now? Should we be pro-bullying? Take a Spartan approach to life? I'm unclear what your issue with anti-bullying is and how it relates to this story.

It seems a little more than suspicious that she dies only days after this happened. I can't imagine she was being bullied SO severely that she feels the need to kill herself. Not to mention the police instantly label it a suicide and appear to have closed the case.

I'd like to think that the Royals wouldn't be behind this but...it's just way to fishy.

Even if it was murder, it might not have been the royals themselves but some overzealous royalist who decided that the nurse had somehow brought shame on the royal family and ought to be punished. And if that's the case, you can't really blame the royal family.

I seems most likely that, if it is suicide, it would be because she had become a laughing stock in the media, someone endlessly mocked for her stupidity over the internet and the papers, probably compounded with other personal issues and maybe a history of depression. In any case, poor woman, and my thoughts are with her family

The thought of it being a conspiracy...makes no sense whatsoever. If the government was able and willing to do this sort of thing, why is Assange still in the Ecudorian Embassy, and why is Abu Qatada still alive? Would have thought they would be rather higher priorities for a covert "hit" (especially as any idiot could get Assange to leave the Embassy...)

You drew the comparison to Marylin Manson and columbine, that shit didn't even have a prank.

That's the point, people on the CNN comments section and on the radio hosts facebook page are jumping down their throats blamming them for this woman's death when it's obvious she was probably deeply troubled from the start. Just the same, really think Rutgers-Homeboy off'ed himself soley over the video-stream?

I'm sure the pranksters do feel mildly responsible. After all, they are. There's a slight risk, when you prank someone. If something bad happens as a result of your prank, you end up with egg on your face.
Sure they probably do, but for fucks sakes they thought "Hey lets put on a hokey accent and try to talk to the duchess", how the hell at all could one draw that it's going to result in someones death? How in any which way are these guys even remotely responsible for this woman killing herself?

I still don't really see what any of this has to do with anti-bullying. Is anti-bullying a bad thing now? Should we be pro-bullying? Take a Spartan approach to life? I'm unclear what your issue with anti-bullying is and how it relates to this story.
My issue? Do I have an agenda now? A platform? A grand scheme? Am I running for state fucking senator?

It just seems odd to me that instead of people jumping to the logical conclusion that clearly this was a troubled individual blah blah blah theyre posting on their facebook page that they have freaking BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS! That's incredibly dangerous thinking that anyone has the power to influence someone to kill themselves. Kids, maybe, but not full grown adults.

Oh it's absolutely absurd, I admit... Still does seem like something a rather powerful family would do if they were evil and had the means.

Queen: Oh Hans! That gentleman across the street that scratched his nose in my general direction!
Hans: I'll have him and his family murdered by sunrise, your Majesty.
Queen: Oh thank you Hans.... Can I get more Tea?

I don't know. Do you? I can only say what I see.

That's fine and I don't disagree, but I don't see an anti-bullying narrative anywhere in this. Telling someone their stupid prank lead to someone's suicide is not anti-bullying. It's anti-pranking, maybe.

That was sort of the point. It wasn't mean to be a functional analogy. It was meant to illustrate how silly it is to tack an anti-bullying narrative onto a completely unrelated story just so you can scoff at what "nonsense" it all is.

He drew the comparison in regards to bullying not pranks. It even said so right next to the comparison.

The question BloatedGluppy asked was why did you talk about antibullying in the first place. It seems somehow related to the incident but I am as confused as him as to how is there a relation and what is it.

Maybe, sadly, this would be the occasion that gets modern journalists, or at least this sorry lot, to learn boundaries. There are responsibilities that come with broadcasting to thousands of people.

Jeopardizing a random person's job, turning them into a laughing stock, while illegally accessing confidential patient information, should not be entertainment and should not go unpunished.

Who the hell calls a hospital and pretends to be the Queen? I mean you'd think they had some kind of... royal secret code or whatever.

And I really dislike prank calls regardless of intention. We've got a local morning show where they prank call businesses pretending to be a small child asking silly questions... and either some people have still not heard about this thing that's been going on for years or it is a sad reenactment of scripted calls.
