The sheer cost of making a top game these days is part of the problem. With gaming being run as a business like never before, risks are taken few and far between. Profits must be maximised, and corners do get cut.

This has been increasing for a long time, and the volume of average games on the shelves is the evidence. If such mediocrity wasn't seemingly so profitable, we would see far more excellent games than we do at the moment.

this

is the BIGGEST wall of text I have seen in a while.

Sorry I don't have anything constructive to add to the conversation btw.

I agree up to a point but I don't have trouble finding games to play due to some decline of intelligent games. There are plenty of games out there and I don't have too much patience with people who are too specific in their requirements for a good game or demand everything in one package. If games like Spore and Fallout 3 don't interest you then try looking past the heavily promoted mega budget games because, guess what, blockbusters have to appeal to average people.

You know i have to agree,

Some of the best RPG games have been those where you sit there, lost, not entirely sure what to do. I find it a challenge from the developers to pick up from that point and continue gaming, in fact i think Baulders Gate and NWN were along those lines.

But at the same time i think your missing some of the earlier RPG games that are early examples of what you are remembering.

Under a Killing Moon
Space Quest
Gabriel Knights series
and Police Quest are a few that i seem to remember giving off that 'Have i done everything or have i missed something'

Good Post and I agree, games are getting a little dumber

I wouldnt want anyone to think I dont enjoy simple games. I am having a blast with Infamous right now and I must have nearly broken my PC playing BF2 for the past 3+ years... My thoughts center on those games that I like to play for a year or more. 10 years ago we would get one of those classics or sometimes 2 a year. 5 years ago we got a couple every coupld of years. Now we have games being released that should fit that bill.... but are falling well short.

I am however extremely hopefull for Bioware's new SW MMO, the early information appears to suggest they are putting a lot of effort into diversity and scale, I hope this continues because the fact that a franchise like SW does not have a decent game associated with it is an absolute testament to my points here. Developers think that all you need is the SW name and you can pump out any old garbage as a game. Fortunately enough money must have been lost by now to get the message across that this is not the case.

I would like the developers of Matrix Online to write a 5 page blog on how exactly NOT to go about making a great franchise into a game, because they too succeded in sucking seeds with that one. Assumption - Movie Franchise = Gaming Success, Reality.... no it doesnt. Now if that simple premise can be picked up by those folks with marketing and programing degrees.... then we might see some improvements.

Also Prons, I see where your coming from but I guess what Im saying about GTA is that from GTA3 to GTA4 we saw a steady decrease in play options. There are more play options in Vice City than in GTA4. However with the Sims its not so much what is in the game but what you can do with it. I have constructed a dungeon in Sims 3 and I am currently working my way through the citizens of Riverview, luring them to the dungeon and torturing and depriving them to death. With a view to being the only one left alive in town.... its a project.

Now thats OPTIONS!
