How are we going to fix the world? Does it need fixing?

So I just finished the Watchmen for the second time, and the more I think about the ending the more it occurs to me that an alternative to internal conflict, like say a giant alien, and giving people as a whole something to stand together against (something usually shown at the cost of great life) is probably the most sensible solution to fixing a huge number of problems we see today (I say sensible, not necessarily right).

Though, of course, the other thought that if it really takes something that drastic to unite/fix humanity, does it really need uniting/fixing? Considering how much worse things could be, is now really all that bad?

Thoughts?

Thousands upon thousands dying from starvation and preventable diseases, massive and tragic amounts of poverty, and a global society that is generally apathetic to the plight of their fellow man and more interested in turning a buck (Which only has value because man says it does).

Could things be worse? Sure.
Are things really bad? Yeah, they are.

We don't really need uniting that much at the moment. Genghis Khan united Mongolia under the simple concepts that all the tribes needed only two things:
1. enough grass to graze their horses 2. a common enemy.

One can not truly "fix" humanity, without destroying what it means to be human. Even if a common threat exist to unite humanity, it can't last forever. At some point the threat will either be gone or forgotten, and the world will return to what it once was.

We can't "fix" humanity. We can only try our best to patch it up, and keep the human race going for as long as possible.

The thing that will fix the world is the Combine Empire.

By killing off 85% of the worlds population, we will reduce carbon dioxide emissions (After all, your corpse emits less gas than a vehicle), most of our energy will be renewable, the world will be united under a single nation, the world's food supply will be big enough to feed the entire population, there won't be any politics and crime will be nearly non-existent.

Thus, the humans would be united and living in a utopia with no worries (except for the metrocops). Under the Combine, of course. Heh heh heh.

Man's greatest when united in a goal. The space race was one such accomplishment. So was beating the Nazi's then the Japanese. If the world as a whole was to ever polarize twords one goal it would move the earth.

I'm really impressed by the pure cynicism we all seem to share here. Keep it up, people!
I'm not trying to be cynical, I'm trying to be realistic.

Think about it. Even with a real common threat to unite us, one side will eventually loose. If we win, then at some point, things will go back to the way they were before. If we loose, then we will either A)Be enslaved and miserable for all eternity, or B) Parrish.

With a fake common threat, we will either forget, or someone will uncover the truth.

You claim to just finished reading Watchmen for a second time. At this point, I believe I should quote the good doctor, "Nothing ends, Adrian. Nothing ever ends."

Ok in no particular order;

a) Control shareholder interests in Industry
b) Regulate the actions of industry in order to protect the environment
c) Create a rival economic order with the Euro as the dominant currency
d) Create or reform the IMF so it is no longer based on the concepts of 'monetarism' and instead measures 'success' in terms of equality rather than growth and GDP
e) Stop worrying about China, it is not a threat to Western dominance
f) Maintain and encourage the Western European model of state/citizen relations rather than the American model
g) Stop subsudising weapons manufacturers and farmers in the developed world
h) Make free trade free rather than biasing the rules in favour of the West
i) Support the European Union and the European integration project

I'm sure their are others but this is what came to me just now.

We will do what we have been doing for most of human dominance in the world. We let the next generation worry about it. Why does everyone think that it will happen in our time. I probably going to happen in like, two thousand and ninety or something.

I'm up for changing the global currency to caps, I mean most types of currency has already plummeted, what's the worst that can happen? Also we should revert back to the 50s, and have a giant Nuclear War. I say we, I mean America, China and Russia. Thats right, Fallout 3. It could happen.

Ductape it fixes everything...but seriously I think you have to start small like treating everyone with respect and try to be a decent human being and then eventually it will work its way up and out.

The more petty and money grubbing we become the worse it seems to make things.
