Great, especially since it was supposed to come out LAST APRIL!

Seriously, my favourite feature of Kickstarter is how the 'Estimated Delivery' dates are set in stone.

Ever since RPS decided to put Molyneux in the hot seat over the shameful performance of Godus, I've been wondering why game journalism hasn't gone after other KS campaigns that have missed their 'Estimated Delivery'. They aren't hard to find. There are plenty of projects that have blown right past their original release dates, all of which received strong positive press coverage during the fundraising phase.

Is it because some of the individuals behind certain projects hold some status of 'Untouchable E-Celeb Who Can Do No Wrong'?
I'd rather have a much more complete game that was delayed rather than an unfinished piece of crap that doesn't deliver on the brief to be honest.

I helped Kickstart it so of course I'm looking forward to it.It is weird how they've basically kept the plot completely under wraps, not even giving a basic summary of the hook aside from souls being a major thing in the world and something happening to the world that gets the player involved. Thus far it's looking great, evoking the sensibilities and aesthetics of decade-old titles while trying to also improve upon them. Thus far the Kickstarted-funded RPGs have been pretty good with stuff like Wasteland 2 and Shadowrun so I have high hopes for Eternity. Then after this I have Numenera to look forward to.

Oh for heaven's sake.

They didn't go after Molyneux because Godus was late.

They went after Molyneux because Godus was GARBAGE.

You think Kickstarter projects are the only ones that get pushed back when they aren't ready?

The creative process is hard as fuck. You put stuff like that on a timeclock, and you get shitty products.

Though a lot of the time an actual schedule can help keep things on track and keep a team focused. We've had a few cases of delays, but nothing outrageous at this point.

People love to outrage over delays, it's kind of ridiculous at this point. I've seen a horrible amount of comments lashing out at Rockstar over the PC release of GTA:V being pushed back, with no real point to it. Of course these people have a schedule but you're building a complex piece of software on a new engine and optimizing it, you're bound to run into bugs, and most devs have learned it's better to release a game optimized and mostly bug free late than it is to rush out a crappy buggy product too soon, that kind of thing has KILLED entire companies before.

Any conspiracy theories beyond that aren't worth considering IMO.

I played it at Gamescom, it was ok. They gave me a small loot bag containing a Pillars of Eternity hip flask and we got to speak with one of the devs while we queued so they're nice guys. I wish them all the best and hope PoE becomes successful.

I'm cautiously optimistic. If done well, I love games like this. Actually, I don't mean 'done well', I mean if they're done in a way that appeals to me, which isn't really the same thing. There are plenty of great games that don't do much for me, and vice versa. But I strongly suspect this one will be worth at least a bit of time.

I've already got Pillars and am waiting for release and was a backer for Numenera so I'll have a copy of that when it comes out as well. I tend to back RPG projects when I can afford to at whatever level will get me a digital copy when the game comes out, or occasionally more if it looks really incredible. It can be a risk as these things fall through, but so far the track record has been pretty decent. That said I've laid off on investing in kickstarters for a while for financial reasons, though there were a couple I wish I could invest in.

As far as Pillars goes, it looks okay, but like most RPGs it's something that has to be played to be appreciated. I like older-style RPGs quite a bit, but at the end of the day games like this don't quite scratch the itch I have to see old school gaming done with more cutting edge technology, of course that's not going to come from kickstarter games. I don't consider indie development a proper replacement for generas that have been neglected by the regular game industry.
