How are you today? Why do people ask this question, when they just want to hear you say good. It's not as if you can say bad! (ps. i hope this hasnt already been done. sorry if it has, plz dont kill me)

Well, yeah you can say 'bad,' I do quite often 'cause I have a tendency to have bad days.

You know what you should do is say 'evil' as opposed to good, THAT'LL throw some people off.

The best response to that question is the honest one.

"How are you today?"
"Pretty shit, actually. I've got all these self-esteem issues, and I'm surrounded by jerks and hypocrites. You?"
"..."

Conversation over. You win.

hmm...I should try that some time just for shits. I mean that was pure win, and I would love to see the look on peoples face lol. Every time someone asks me that question I just give out an "eh..." given that I am a rather reserved individual and can't really "talk", just listen most often.

I ask it:
a) To start conversation.
b) Because I genuinely care how other people are sometimes (sympathy is a difficult one to master but trust me some people can feel it!)
c) To be polite. If somebody is looking down I'm not just going to ignore that.

i hate people who say that

and i have someone who says it every damn time i go on msn ~_~

i just say "same as always"
and if it really bugs me i add "- and if it changes at all, I will tell You"

as most people have said it's a way to start a conversation AND to show some concern for your fellow human

i mean you can always say "good" or you can also say "i'm sick as a dog" or "don't ask" or what ever.

Its just an attempt at small talk. Just say your fine and be on your way.
